SSFF & ASIA 2026: A Grand Opening Filled with Stars
The Short Short Film Festival & Asia 2026 (SSFF & ASIA), recognized by the Academy Awards, has kicked off its extraordinary 28th edition in style with a dazzling red carpet ceremony held on May 25 at MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives. With the theme “Cinema Engineering,” this year’s festival focuses on the intricate design of filmmaking, combining elements like camera work, lighting, sound, and AI to create immersive experiences for audiences. The festival received an impressive 5,000 submissions from over 100 countries and regions, showcasing around 250 selected works through both in-person and online screenings.
The opening ceremony was a star-studded event, bringing together numerous guests dressed in stunning fashion, all celebrating the power and artistry of short films. Actor Tetsuya Bessho, who is the representative of the festival, along with film ambassador LiLiCo, graced the red carpet. Bessho remarked, "Thanks to our supporters, the festival, which began in 1999, has now reached its 28th year. It’s wonderful to see so many guests here today for the opening." LiLiCo humorously reflected on her 13-year journey as the festival’s ambassador, saying, "I feel like I’ve been here for six years! The years have flown by!"
Among the guests, young filmmakers and influencers from the show “Cho-Juuhai” took the spotlight to promote the charm of short films. Hironana Nagahama and Ayaka Honmou, new to the red carpet experience, shared their excitement and nervousness. "Standing on the red carpet has been a dream of mine! This feels like a dream come true!" exclaimed Nagahama.
The film "BREAK SHOT" was also part of the celebration, with first-time director Kuruma Takahira and actors such as Aoi Morikawa, Yamashiro Maeda, and comedic talents sharing their experiences. Takahira passionately explained the key attraction of his project, expressing excitement about how he showcased the brilliant performance of the main actor, Tomohiro Kodama.
Moreover, Saito Takumi, a producer involved with the festival's culinary program, and several others discussed their work on the film examining friendship through the lens of food titled "The Story of How We Came to Visit Mendokoro Maro." Their discussions highlighted the impact of ramen on cultural expression, especially during the pandemic.
During the opening ceremony, significant awards were presented, including the prestigious Takanawa Gateway City Award to director Hiroshi Koreeda, acknowledging his profound influence in the film industry and his commitment to nurturing young talent.
