Takashimaya and Tatsumura Art Weaving Unveil CASA TATSUMURA Interior Collection at Milan Design Week 2026

CASA TATSUMURA: A Celebration of Tradition and Modernity in Interior Design

Takashimaya, based in Osaka, and Tatsumura Art Weaving from Kyoto are set to unveil their first-ever interior collection, CASA TATSUMURA, at the renowned Milan Design Week, scheduled for April 21-26, 2026. This marks a significant collaboration for the two esteemed companies as they present a luxurious collection celebrating the artistry of textile weaving.

CASA TATSUMURA emerges as part of the original brand ‘Tatsumura Nishiki’, which strives for the pinnacle of art weaving. This launch is especially significant as it coincides with the centenary of Tatsumura Nishiki, established in 1927, indicating a celebration of heritage and craft. The inaugural interior collection features six sumptuous pieces designed to adorn various spaces such as the entrance hall, living room, dining area, and bedroom. Each piece is crafted with the highest quality materials, embodying a blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics and contemporary design principles.

Design Concept and Collaboration

To spearhead the creative vision of CASA TATSUMURA, Takashimaya and Tatsumura Art Weaving have appointed Akiko Kawamura, the creative director at Eightablish Inc., who will serve as the overall producer and designer for the collection. Kawamura’s unique ability to weave together art direction, graphic and interior design sets a promising stage for the collection's branding and furniture design.

Collaborating closely with Kawamura is Karimoku Furniture, a reputable Japanese furniture maker known for its exceptional craftsmanship and innovative use of materials. Their partnership aims to fortify CASA TATSUMURA’s ambition to create an interior collection that not only complements the elegance of Tatsumura’s woven art but also adheres to the highest standards of functional design and aesthetic appeal.

The collection aims to strike a balance between dimensionality and subtlety, conveying the richness of Japanese artistry through innovative designs that embrace concepts like illumination and mobility. For instance, the traditional 'Andon' floor light is envisioned to create a warm, inviting ambiance using soft, indirect lighting that delicately shapes the atmosphere of a space, reflecting the Japanese ethos of beauty in simplicity.

Innovative Designs with Cultural Significance

Within the collection, elements like the 'Byou-Bu' and 'Gou-Buchi' showcase the versatility of design that bridges traditional Japanese architecture and modern functionality. The 'Byou-Bu', or folding screen, serves the dual purpose of an artistic statement and a functional space divider, embodying the concept of movable contemporary art that enhances interactivity within a space.

Further encapsulating Japan's architectural elegance is the inclusion of the 'Kaku-tenjo', renowned for its intricate latticework. This design element, typically seen in impressive ceilings, is transformed into a table, allowing a new perspective on traditional beauty while remaining thoughtfully functional. CASA TATSUMURA is not merely about aesthetics; each piece is an exploration of utility merged with the meticulous beauty of weaving.

Legacy and Future Vision

The partnership has its roots in a deep-seated history between Takashimaya and Tatsumura, dating back to where the first Nishiki exhibition was held in 1927. This strong and historic relationship ensures that the CASA TATSUMURA venture is more than just an unveiling—it is a testament to the enduring commitment to Japanese cultural heritage and craftsmanship.

The fifth generation descendent of the Tatsumura lineage, Ryosuke Tatsumura, emphasizes the art of weaving as a narrative of Japanese culture. The ethos of 'Woven Dynamics and Liberation' speaks to his mission to bring the beautiful craft of weaving to a global audience and continues to foster collaborations with various creators and artisans.

As these companies prepare for their debut at Milan Design Week, CASA TATSUMURA promises to deliver a showcase that epitomizes the intersection of tradition and modern design, inviting the world to experience the essence of Japanese beauty reinterpreted for the contemporary era.
