Boston Children's Museum Welcomes New Leadership: Melissa Higgins Takes the Helm
In an exciting transition for one of Boston's most cherished institutions, the Boston Children's Museum has appointed Melissa Higgins as its new President and Chief Executive Officer. Higgins, who previously served as Vice President of Programs and Exhibits, will take over from the esteemed Carole Charnow, who has been a beacon of leadership at the Museum for the past 16 years.
A Proven Track Record
Melissa Higgins has been a vital part of the Boston Children's Museum since 2018, and her contributions to the Museum have been remarkable. Starting as Senior Director of STEAM Programming, she quickly rose through the ranks due to her exceptional vision and leadership skills. Throughout her tenure, she has spearheaded numerous key initiatives, including the Museum's STEAM and Art Labs and various online learning resources that have broadened access to educational experiences for children and their families.
Her efforts have culminated in the successful launch of the CreatedBy Festival, as well as summer camp programs and important exhibit redesigns. Notably, Higgins is known for securing grant funding that has empowered the Museum to develop partnerships and expand its reach within the community.
A Vision for Impact
Higgins expressed her excitement and commitment to the Museum’s mission, stating, "I believe deeply in the power of Boston Children's Museum to create positive change and impacts—for families in Greater Boston and far beyond." Her focus on creating playful and impactful experiences for children is evident, as she strives to develop new programs that resonate with the needs of families today.
Having spent over eight years at the Museum, Higgins highlights the vital role this institution plays as a catalyst for meaningful, inspiring, and joyful learning experiences. Her background includes valuable experience in education at WGBH and in curriculum development for the Engineering is Elementary program at the Museum of Science in Boston.
Leadership Transition and Future Aspirations
The Museum community, including the board, is elated by Higgins' ascension to the role of CEO. Carole Charnow, her predecessor, praised Higgins’ innovative spirit and high regard within the field, describing her as an inspirational leader.
David Healy, the Board Chair, expressed his gratitude towards Charnow for her invaluable contributions, while reaffirming confidence in Higgins' ability to reinforce the Museum's position as a crucial community resource.
Higgins will officially step into her new role on August 17, after which Charnow will be honored with the title of President Emerita, recognizing her significant impact during her tenure.
