Johnson & Wales University Unveils Pioneering Three-Year Degree Program
In an exciting development for higher education,
Johnson & Wales University (JWU) has announced the launch of a
three-year Bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management at its Charlotte campus. This innovative program, which offers 90 credit hours, aims to streamline the educational journey for students eager to enter the hospitality workforce without the traditional four-year commitment.
A Game-Changer in Education
This initiative marks JWU as the first institution in the Southeast to provide an in-person, three-year bachelor’s degree accompanied by a full residential experience. The decision comes in response to growing demands from students who wish to lessen their financial burdens while obtaining a comprehensive and timely education. Chancellor
Mim L. Runey, LP.D. emphasized the university's commitment to offering transformative and affordable educational opportunities, stating, "Twenty-one years ago, North Carolina business and government leaders invited JWU to launch a campus in Charlotte to support growth in the hospitality and food service sectors. Today, we are proud to roll out this pioneering three-year degree program."
Approval and Structure
The program received official approval in June from the
North Carolina Board of Governors and falls under JWU’s existing accreditation. Notably, this new model differs from conventional accelerated programs that typically require year-round coursework or prior credits from high school. Instead, students will maintain a typical semester load during the academic year, integrating workplace experiences gained in the hospitality domain as part of their degree requirements. They will focus less on elective courses, allowing them to immerse themselves in their major studies.
Dr.
Richard Mathieu, Ph.D., President of JWU Charlotte, added, "This initiative reflects our continual adaptation to the changing landscape of education while driving workforce development in key sectors like hospitality. These industries are pivotal to the Southeast's economic future."
Program Design and Benefits
The curriculum will retain the core general education requirements similar to the four-year program. Dr.
Jennifer Galipeau, Ed.D., Dean of College of Hospitality Business, stated that this three-year path not only meets the pressing demands for skilled professionals in hospitality but also immerses students in practical experiences, ensuring they graduate well-equipped for successful careers.
The Charlotte campus will also continue to host a traditional four-year degree route alongside this novel offering, thus providing students with diverse educational choices. Currently, the Charlotte campus features 20 majors, broadening the academic opportunities for its attendees.
Enrollment Process
Applications for the new Hospitality Management program are now open, welcoming prospective students to join the inaugural class in
Fall 2026. Interested individuals can find detailed information regarding the application process on JWU’s official website at
