A recent survey conducted by Shallot Communications and executed by Censuswide highlights a significant trend in how companies are navigating political communication in the workplace. The findings, derived from 508 internal communications professionals, reveal that a remarkable 90% of organizations still engage their employees in discussions concerning social and political issues, despite a broader trend of retreating from public political commentary.
The results show that a large majority, specifically 44%, of respondents report that their companies frequently discuss relevant political and social issues and how these topics influence business operations. Additionally, 46% indicate that their organizations occasionally address these matters within internal communications. Notably, less than 10% of the surveyed professionals claim that their companies rarely or never engage in discussions about political topics with their teams.
This internal focus on sensitive matters appears to be a strategic response to the unique challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing political climate. As companies increasingly prioritize their internal communication strategies, it becomes clear that employees expect clarity and consistency from their leadership. Tim Granholm, co-founder of Shallot Communications, echoes this sentiment, noting,
