Nuvoton to Begin Mass Production of Innovative Industrial BM-ICs for Enhanced Battery Management Systems

Nuvoton's New Industrial BM-ICs for 48V Battery Systems

Nuvoton Technology Corporation Japan (NTCJ) is poised to revolutionize the battery management landscape with the introduction of its latest industrial Battery Monitoring ICs (BM-ICs), the KA49701A and KA49702A. Set to enter mass production in April 2025, these new devices are specifically designed for use with 48V battery systems, offering enhanced safety features and streamlined system construction options.

Enhancing Battery Safety

The newly developed BM-ICs are crucial for ensuring that battery systems remain safe during unexpected anomalies such as overcharging or excessive discharging. In the event of a failure in vital circuits—like the Analog-to-Digital (AD) converter or multiplexer—the device is equipped with built-in protection mechanisms, which minimizes the reliance on external safety circuits. This integration not only simplifies design but also helps in reducing the overall system cost.

NTCJ has incorporated advanced diagnostic features that can detect failures within the main circuits, allowing the cut-off switch to initiate automatically. This functionality provides enhanced Battery Management System (BMS) safety and cost efficiency.

Industry-Leading Voltage Measurement Accuracy

One of the standout features of the KA49701A and KA49702A is their impressive voltage measurement accuracy. By utilizing a 16-bit AD converter with advanced noise reduction and digital filtering techniques, NTCJ has achieved a measurement precision of +/-2.9mV, which is among the best in the industry. This increased accuracy allows for maximum utilization of battery capacity, ensuring that energy sources can be effectively managed under various environmental conditions. The ICs are compliant with national standards in China, making them suitable for stationary battery applications used in both extreme cold and hot climates.

Power Consumption Optimization

In an effort to enhance battery life, NTCJ has prioritized power consumption efficiency in the new BM-ICs. The cell voltage measurement time has been significantly reduced, resulting in an operational current draw of only 260 microamperes—less than a tenth of prior standards set by NTCJ. Additional optimization has lowered shutdown current consumption to a mere 0.1 microampere. This optimization minimizes self-discharge during long-distance transport and extended storage periods, preventing battery deterioration

This advancement in power efficiency is particularly significant for lithium-ion batteries, which often face challenges in energy retention during lengthy shipping or storage scenarios.

Availability and Further Information

With production set to commence in just a few months, the KA49701A and KA49702A BM-ICs represent an exciting development in the world of battery management technology. This promising innovation not only enhances safety and accuracy in battery monitoring but also reduces overall system costs, making them an attractive option for manufacturers and developers in the growing battery systems market.
