Introduction
VitaNet Japan Inc., based in Minato-ku, Tokyo, is at the forefront of revolutionizing airport advertising with its innovative technology, AccuNotify™. In a recent pilot project backed by the Okinawa Regional Development Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the company has demonstrated the effectiveness of this next-generation retail media in Naha Airport. The technology can deliver real-time information to passengers' smartphones as they stand in front of specific stores or products. With a click-through rate (CTR) of 14.9%, a user satisfaction score of 4.77 out of 5, and a system uptime of 100%, the results are a clear indicator of the potential to transform advertising spaces in public areas like airports.
Airport Advertising Potential
Airports represent a vast market for advertising, yet many struggle with sufficient inventory. Globally, the average stay for each passenger has been expanding to 160-180 minutes, presenting a prime opportunity for retail engagement. Interestingly, while about 89% of travelers use smartphones, only 31% proactively search for store and brand information in airports. Consequently, a significant 70% pass by stores, absorbed in their devices and missing out on potential advertisements. This gap reveals a tremendous opportunity that has remained largely untapped in high-value spaces like airports.
Economic Impact
Taking Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as an example, non-aeronautical revenue reaches around $524 million annually. A mere 1% improvement in purchase engagement in such a setting can yield an estimated revenue boost of approximately ¥790 million (around $5.3 million). Major airports in Japan, including Haneda, Narita, and Kansai, similarly possess a robust base for non-aeronautical revenue. Hence, providing tailored information along passenger pathways could open up significant new revenue streams for airport operators, duty-free shops, and brands alike.
Results from the Pilot Project
The pilot project provided integration of the AccuNotify system, successfully recording:
- - Click-Through Rate (CTR): 14.9% – this figure significantly surpasses conventional web display advertisements.
- - User Satisfaction: 4.77 out of 5 – measured among those who received notifications.
- - System Uptime: 100% – reflecting results from equipment within the airport over a 50-day operational analysis, excluding power disruptions.
- - Delivery Precision: as accurate as 60cm – enabled by AccuNotify's patented technology for precise targeting.
AccuNotify leverages a unique BLE control technology that creates dynamic communication between beacons, enabling a precise 60cm targeting range that was previously unattainable. These devices are strategically placed in critical areas of Naha Airport, such as check-in counters and duty-free zones, complying with strict operational standards for such important public facilities. The system automatically sends optimal information to passengers' smartphones when they are positioned at designated locations, effectively capturing the crucial 'moment of purchase decision'. This innovation sets AccuNotify apart from traditional digital advertising.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, VitaNet aims to expand upon the success of this project by developing a shared digital platform that not only airline companies but also tourism and retail businesses can benefit from. By providing software development kits (SDKs) compatible with official applications and facilitating integration with external systems, this model is set to be rolled out across domestic and international transit hubs. There are also plans to announce results from implementations in railway and transport sectors separately.
