The GAC-KD Plant in Cambodia Begins Production, Pioneering Local Manufacturing Standards

GAC-KD Plant in Cambodia: A New Era of Local Manufacturing

On September 17, a significant milestone was achieved in the automotive manufacturing sector with the inauguration of the GAC-KD Plant in Cambodia, located in Kampong Chhnang Province. This event was graced by prominent figures including Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and the Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, Wang Wenbin, alongside key executives from the GAC Group and their strategic partner, TH Group.

This plant marks a crucial transition for GAC, moving from merely exporting complete vehicles to implementing local manufacturing processes. This shift not only supports GAC’s expansion strategy in Cambodia but also highlights the strengthening economic ties between China and Cambodia.

During the ceremony, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized that the initiation of this plant represents a significant step in the industrial transformation envisioned by the Royal Government of Cambodia. He noted that this facility would facilitate the country’s shift from labor-intensive industries to capital and technology-driven sectors, thus bolstering local industrial growth and enhancing the national economy.

The GAC-KD project saw its full-scale development kick off in 2024 and, thanks to the coordinated efforts among all partners, the construction and preparatory phases were completed on schedule. The TH Group is responsible for investments, building, and the assembly of vehicles, while GAC provides completely knocked down (CKD) kits and extensive technical support across the supply chain. The plant is designed with an anticipated annual production capacity of around 10,000 vehicles.

Since entering the Cambodian market, GAC has shown remarkable growth. Particularly, the TRUMPCHI brand has surged, recording an average annual growth rate exceeding 300% over the last three years, making it the leading Chinese car brand in Cambodia by 2025. The commencement of operations at the GAC-KD facility is a pivotal development in their continued expansion strategies.

In its seven years of operation in Cambodia, GAC has been committed to sharing growth opportunities with the local workforce, enhancing job creation, capacity building, and technological transfer. The company has worked diligently to establish new sales avenues, launch innovative products, build its brand presence, and modernize its manufacturing capabilities.

This initiative not only symbolizes progress for GAC but also bodes well for Cambodia’s aspirations to enhance its manufacturing landscape. The GAC-KD Plant is expected to contribute significantly to the local economy, fostering greater competitiveness in the automotive sector.

As Cambodia continues its economic development journey, partnerships like those between GAC and TH Group will be critical in driving innovation and establishing robust manufacturing ecosystems. Furthermore, the success of the GAC-KD Plant will likely encourage similar investments in the region, enhancing Cambodia's position within the Southeast Asian automotive market.
