In light of increasingly severe summer heat, a recent survey conducted by Konnect Labo, operated by Asuka Corporation, has provided critical insights into the state of heatstroke measures in childcare settings. The study involved 100 full-time childcare workers with over five years of experience, revealing alarming trends regarding the implementation of heatstroke prevention methods.

Key Findings


1. Intensified Perception of Summer Heat:
An overwhelming 96% of the surveyed childcare workers indicated that they believe summer temperatures are more severe compared to five years ago. Specifically, 81% responded that they 'strongly agree' with this sentiment, while 15% 'somewhat agree.' This growing concern illustrates the need for effective responses to the changing climate.

2. Strengthened Heatstroke Measures:
82% of respondents reported having enhanced their heatstroke prevention strategies since five years ago. Among these measures, the most commonly implemented strategies include:
  • - Regular hydration practices (81%)
  • - Adjustments to outdoor playtime (78%)
  • - Managing indoor temperatures and humidity (72%)

Challenges in Managing Outdoor Play and Heat


Despite the improved measures, workers reported significant challenges, particularly in balancing outdoor play with heat safety. 62.9% of respondents mentioned that it is difficult to maintain this balance. Furthermore, 39.2% expressed uncertainty regarding appropriate judgment criteria for heat management, and 30.9% found it challenging to monitor each child's health.

Creative Individual Approaches to Heat Management


When asked about personal initiatives to combat heat-related issues, almost half of the respondents (49%) said they are increasing the variety of indoor activities available for children. Additionally, 36% of the respondents are enhancing information-sharing among staff to ensure consistent measures are upheld.

In a creative twist, several respondents shared additional innovative approaches, such as:
  • - Utilizing shaded areas for water play
  • - Frequent checks on child’s color, temperature, and room conditions to make necessary adjustments
  • - Using tents to create shade during outdoor activities
  • - Collaborating with nurses to ensure that measures taken are in alignment with the latest health guidelines.

Demand for Expert Support


A significant 83% of childcare workers indicated a desire for specialist guidance or support in their heatstroke prevention efforts. Among them, 30% expressed a strong willingness to utilize such resources, while 53% stated they would take advantage of them if the opportunity arises.

This survey underscores the pressing need for enhanced heatstroke prevention strategies in childcare centers, especially with increasing temperatures globally due to climate change. As childcare professionals strive to ensure the health and safety of children under their care, practical and effective solutions must be developed.
