FANCL Launches Initiative to Educate Students on Diversity, Inclusion and Menopause Understanding

FANCL's Educational Initiative on Menopause and Inclusion



FANCL, a prominent health and skincare company in Japan, has recently launched a significant educational initiative aimed at middle and high school students across two notable institutions: Kenzen Joshi Gakuin Junior High School and High School in Hyogo and Seiko Gakuin High School in Kanagawa. This initiative, themed around diversity and inclusion, comes under the umbrella of their FANCL MENOPAUSE ACTION program, which seeks to foster a deeper understanding of menopause, a topic not commonly discussed in school settings.

Objectives of the Course


The primary purpose of this program is to engage students in meaningful discussions regarding menopause while raising awareness on diversity and inclusion. The session kicked off with the pivotal question: Why do companies promote diversity and inclusion? From there, students were provided with a comprehensive overview of these concepts, emphasizing the significance of understanding gender equity in contemporary society. By addressing health challenges, particularly menopause, the initiative underscores the importance of discussing female health issues within the broader context of women's empowerment.

Students watched a video exploring menopause available on the FANCL MENOPAUSE ACTION website, sparking substantial discussions among peers on how they can better support those experiencing menopause. Some responses included aspirations like, "We want to foster an environment where people can consult freely" and "I wish to express gratitude to my mother for her support through her menopause." This engagement illustrates the crucial shift in understanding among students about this natural life stage.

Survey Insights


Following the sessions, an encouraging survey was conducted. Responses revealed that over 90% of students felt they had gained a richer understanding of diversity and inclusion. Additionally, more than 60% reported an enhanced appreciation for the SDGs and felt motivated to take action in their own capabilities concerning these goals.

When asked about their prior knowledge of menopause, a significant number of them admitted to having little to no understanding of the symptoms and causes. However, after participating in the course, approximately 95% expressed clarity and comprehension of the subject matter.

Students also shared their intended actions post-course, with over 60% indicating a desire to support their mothers through menopause. About 35% expressed a wish to deepen their knowledge about menopause further, emphasizing the initiative's effectiveness in promoting awareness and understanding.

Reflection and Future Prospects


Students shared reflections that revealed a collective desire to create a more open dialogue about menopause. Comments included insights like, "Understanding menopause is essential as it affects all women," and "I wish to create an atmosphere that encourages open discussion on this topic." These statements highlight the initiative's impact in dismantling the stigma surrounding women's health issues, shedding light on the need for ongoing education.

As the FANCL MENOPAUSE ACTION continues to grow, it is committed to not leaving anyone behind. Starting in October 2024, FANCL plans to extend this initiative further to engage students and young adults, providing a platform for accurate learning and discussion about menopause. The initiative also runs lectures and events in universities, specialized schools, and other venues such as FANCL Ginza Square.

In total, 12 sessions have been held to date, with over 2,500 participants, including those attending online. FANCL will persist in the mission of spreading accurate information via their website and various courses, all aimed at expanding understanding of menopause and supporting those affected.
