Camp College 2025: A Healing Retreat for Pediatric Cancer Survivors
The certified NPO Shine On Kids, led by Kimball Forsyth, organized the
Camp College 2025 event on July 5 and 6, 2025, at the Fuji Premium Resort near Lake Kawaguchi in Yamanashi Prefecture. This annual gathering, initiated in 2017, serves as a platform for pediatric cancer survivors and their siblings to connect, share experiences, and deepen their bonds.
Sharing Common Experiences
Upon completing treatment, pediatric cancer survivors reintegrate into society, often feeling isolated. This program was created in response to feedback from children in our programs expressing a desire to connect with peers who have shared similar experiences. While continuing with medication and regular check-ups, these children and their families spend time in a peaceful, nature-rich environment, finding comfort and support among each other’s stories.
At the camp, we welcomed 36 participants, including 11 pediatric cancer survivors and their siblings. Initially, the children appeared somewhat anxious during the opening ceremony. However, their faces soon lit up when engaging in musical activities led by prominent Glass Harp artist Eri Ohashi and music producer Seiji Yui, creating a joyful atmosphere filled with laughter, courtesy of the playful antics of clinical clowns.
Engaging Activities at Camp
One of the main activities was the
Reflection Beads, a form of art therapy that originated in the United States. This exercise involved stringing beads that symbolize the various treatments undergone during their cancer journey, prompting attendees to reflect on their experiences and foster self-esteem. For many children, especially those who were too young to participate during their treatments, this was their first opportunity to confront their past and discuss their feelings.
Siblings participated through
Sibling Beads, where they were able to express their emotions and share their experiences within the context of a family often centered around the child in treatment. This reflection time was crucial in articulating their thoughts and understanding each other better.
Volunteers, including bead ambassadors traditionally active in hospitals, contributed significantly, enriching the camp experience.
During the evenings, participants split into groups for peer talks where they could candidly share their feelings stemming from their cancer battles. Parents also held a dedicated
Parent Night to express their emotions and support one another, creating a warm environment of understanding.
Voices from Participants
- - “I became ill at just 0 years old, and I wasn't sure how to talk about it. This experience gave me a great opportunity to reflect on treatment with my child.”
- - “My sibling was able to make friends who have gone through similar experiences. It’s comforting to know that I’m not alone.”
- - “The peer talks allowed me to connect with other families who experienced similar difficulties, making it easier to understand the joy and struggles of returning to a regular life.”
The camp saw the involvement of high school students with diverse experiences, who served as
Child Leaders to support activities like group singing and bead stringing, ensuring everyone had an enjoyable time.
