In this insightful report, 94% of veterinarians acknowledged that financial considerations significantly impacted their ability to deliver the necessary treatments. Intriguingly, 56% of these professionals noted that cost factors often limited their capacity to provide the recommended care, while 38% indicated this occurs frequently. This aligns with pet parents’ concerns regarding accessibility, as cost emerged as the leading reason for declining veterinary treatment, occurring over twice as often as other factors.

Disconnect in Treatment Recommendations

The study unveiled a significant gap in communication between veterinarians and pet owners about managing healthcare costs. While 81% of veterinarians asserted that they frequently recommend alternative treatment options when clients decline care due to financial limitations, a contrasting 73% of pet parents who turned down care reported not being offered more affordable alternatives.

Moreover, only 41% of veterinarians stated they provide payment plans to clients who are facing financial difficulties; however, a mere 23% of pet parents have claimed to have ever been presented with such plans by their veterinarians. Lack of Formal Education on Financial Discussions

Furthermore, 74% felt that the decision to euthanize a pet due to financial constraints is one of the most challenging aspects of their job. Alarmingly, 41% reported that such heart-wrenching outcomes occur at least sometimes in their practice.

Veterinarians expressed profound worries when care is declined, with 98% concerned about the pet’s health deteriorating and 88% worried about the emotional impact on the pet’s family. When contemplating treatment cost concerns, merely 17% of veterinarians typically initiate discussions about clients’ financial positions before recommending care. In contrast, many wait until after treatment recommendations have been made or only address costs when prompted by clients.
