A Collective Celebration of Service: MLK Day Volunteer Festival in L.A.
On January 20, 2025, more than 3,500 residents of Los Angeles convened for the L.A. Works' annual MLK Day Volunteer Festival, held at the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This event celebrated the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a variety of community-focused initiatives designed to foster social justice and service within the community.
The festival featured an impressive array of volunteer projects geared towards addressing pressing needs in the Los Angeles area. Participants dedicated their time to create 150 no-sew blankets, assembled almost 2,000 ready-to-eat food kits, and prepared hygiene kits while extending gratitude to first responders by crafting 200 thank-you notes.
In addition to these impactful tasks, volunteers engaged in creative projects, including the construction of Dr. King mosaics destined for local organizations, as well as a sports initiative that saw them pump up 1,720 balls for donation to local Recreational and Parks programs. They also built 250 skateboards and skateboard racks specifically targeted for youth in underprivileged areas, promoting both fitness and fun.
The generosity of participants was evident, as nearly 8,000 items were collected for distribution to those affected by recent wildfires. This included water bottles, socks, hats, canned goods, and other essential hygiene products—demonstrating the commitment of Angelenos to support their neighbors in times of need.
Deborah Brutchey, the Executive Director of L.A. Works, emphasized the profound impact of Dr. King's vision, stating, "Dr. King's dream of a beloved community calls on all of us to take action. Today's turnout and the results of these projects highlight the strength that comes from collective service. Together, we not only uplift our neighborhoods but also personify the values of compassion, equity, and unity that Dr. King advocated for."
This year’s festival was particularly poignant as it coincided with Inauguration Day, allowing volunteers to reflect on bridging community service and civic duty. L.A. Works encourages Angelenos to internalize this spirit of giving beyond just one day, advocating for continuous engagement in civic responsibilities throughout the year.

As the largest volunteer action center in the region, L.A. Works has rallied Angelenos around social equity and community service since its inception in 1991. With each MLK Day festival, they continue to spotlight the incredible possibilities when individuals come together with a shared purpose, igniting a spirit of enduring service to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
