Discovering the Charms of Mitaka Through Delicious Sandwich Creations

In an exciting initiative titled "Discover the Charms of Mitaka," sixth grade students from Mitaka City Elementary School have crafted an expressive line of gluten-free sandwiches to highlight their beloved city. The project was made possible in collaboration with MOCMO sandwiches, a local sandwich shop known for their exquisite gluten-free offerings. On the first floor of Kichijoji Marui, you will find their charming creations on display from February 14th to 16th, 2026.

The Inspiration Behind the Initiative

Motivated by the desire to share the beauty and allure of their hometown, these enthusiastic students embarked on a journey beyond just culinary art. The project revolves around the theme "Let’s spread the charm of Mitaka to more people!" The initiative was spearheaded by students participating in an entrepreneurship education program, which aims to enhance their problem-solving and communication skills as well as their ability to engage with the community.

Working closely with teachers and local businesses, they sought real-world learning that has resulted in practical achievements. The program is not designed merely as a means to foster young entrepreneurs, but as an educational opportunity to discover and tackle societal challenges.

With expert guidance from Kazama of 株式会社幕明 and Tanaka of MOCMO sandwiches, students delved into the realms of product planning, cost control, and sales strategy — enabling them to grasp the fundamentals of running a real business. Their combined efforts culminated in the completion of a special sandwich, designed to encapsulate the unique essence of Mitaka.

A Taste of Mitaka in Every Bite

The sandwiches are crafted using locally sourced vegetables and fruits and reflect the creativity of the students. By brainstorming in groups and presenting ideas to MOCMO sandwiches, they developed six unique products from a collection of 15 original proposals. The final sandwich lineup includes:

- “Twinkling Star Observatory Sandwich” – ¥750 (tax included)
- “Matcha Strawberry Bean Sandwich” – ¥850 (tax included)
- “Double Berry Sandwich” – ¥350 (tax included)
- “Carrot Shirishiri Sandwich” – ¥300 (tax included)
- “Honey Sweet Potato Brulee Sandwich” – ¥750 (tax included)
- “Pumpkin Roll” – ¥300 (tax included)
