Satsuki Festival Blooms in Itabashi: A Celebration of Artful Azaleas

Experience the Splendor of the Satsuki Festival

Every year, the Satsuki Festival brings joy and excitement to many visitors, and this year is no exception. Held at the first-floor event square of Itabashi Ward Office, this popular festival, supported by JA Tokyo Aoba and the Joboku Satsuki Association, focuses on promoting local agriculture through a vibrant display of stunning azaleas as well as a sale of fresh vegetables from the area.

Azalea Exhibition

From May 10 to 14, visitors can marvel at the meticulous craftsmanship of avid azalea enthusiasts. This year's exhibition boasts a diverse array of plants, including both small bonsai varieties and blossoms standing over a meter tall—all presented in a colorful display. The first day of the festival includes a contest where awards are given by the Itabashi District and the Japan Satsuki Association, highlighting the best specimens on display. Visitors can witness the dedication and artistry of growers who have cultivated these stunning floral works.

  • - Exhibition Dates: May 10 (Sun) to May 14 (Thu) from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (final day until 4:00 PM)

Fresh Local Produce

In addition to the spectacular azaleas, the festival will feature a marketplace where visitors can purchase freshly harvested produce from local farmers. The sale runs from May 11 to May 14, open each day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (with the final day concluding at 4:00 PM). The agricultural products on offer will include a variety of freshly picked vegetables and fruits, all cultivated in the vicinity. Due to the festival's popularity, it's advisable to arrive early, as local specialties are expected to sell out quickly, especially by midday.

  • - Produce Sale Dates: May 11 (Mon) to May 14 (Thu)

Educational Workshops

On May 15, festival-goers can also participate in creative gardening workshops, although these sessions require advance reservations, which have already reached capacity. The first workshop invites participants to create beautiful potted baskets, while the second focuses on the care techniques necessary for maintaining healthy azaleas. These educational initiatives support community involvement in gardening and horticulture.

  • - Workshop Schedule:
- Potted Basket Workshop: May 15 (Fri) from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM (Reservations closed)
- Azalea Care Class: May 15 (Fri) from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM (Reservations closed)
