Argus Introduces New Ethylene and Propylene Price Indexes for European Markets

Argus Unveils Innovative Price Indexes for European Chemicals

In a significant development for the chemical markets, Argus Media, a prominent global energy and commodity reporting agency, has rolled out new monthly price indexes for ethylene and propylene within the European domestic markets. This initiative is set to promote enhanced transparency in vital sectors of the chemical industry.

Understanding the New Price Indexes

The newly introduced Argus northwest Europe ethylene and propylene indexes serve as independent price references tailored to the needs of the chemical industry. Developed through collaboration with market participants, these indexes aim to provide reliable benchmarks for pricing mechanisms. Initially intended to assist in traditional Monthly Contract Price (MCP) negotiations, these indexes can be utilized as alternatives or in conjunction with existing pricing benchmarks.

The calculation of these indexes is grounded in a transparent methodology that is publicly accessible. The methodology combines spot prices for ethylene or propylene with corresponding spot cracker feedstock prices, including naphtha, propane, and butane, all of which are evaluated by Argus.

The Historical Context

For decades, the European MCPs for ethylene and propylene have been regarded as key benchmarks, used as a baseline for long-term contract pricing. Traditionally, these prices have been established through negotiations among industry participants, which have allowed companies to negotiate contract prices, often leading to discounts off the MCPs. However, a noticeable decline in participation in these negotiations has prompted the need for fresh pricing solutions.

In addition to ethylene and propylene markets, MCPs function as crucial benchmarks for various downstream value chains, impacting the pricing of polymers and other chemical products. Consequently, these price indexes can significantly influence the cost of numerous industrial and consumer goods.

Embracing Change

According to Adrian Binks, the Chairman and CEO of Argus Media, the introduction of these new price indexes is a response to the diminishing engagement in the traditional MCP process. Binks stated, “We are pleased to have worked closely with chemical market participants to develop a fresh approach to pricing. Our new indexes respond to reduced participation in the monthly contract price process and offer a fresh transparency which addresses a growing disconnect between contract prices and observed market values.”

This initiative is part of Argus's ongoing commitment to deliver accurate, reliable, and independent price assessments, aiming to demystify complex and opaque markets.
