Taisho University Unveils the Karugamo Developmental Clinical Center
On September 17, 2025, Taisho University (located in Toshima, Tokyo) established the Karugamo Developmental Clinical Center within the Sugamo Town Campus. This new facility serves as a branch of the Counseling Research Institute, reflecting the university's commitment to tackle significant societal issues such as the increasing number of children requiring special support, prolonged school absenteeism, social withdrawal, parenting anxiety, and child abuse.
The center aims to provide counseling based on developmental perspectives and comprehensive developmental assessments to the local community. It also seeks to enhance the expertise of students and create further learning opportunities for psychology professionals. To mark this inauguration, an open day event will be held to inform community members and specialized institutions interested in the activities of the Karugamo Center.
The Sugamo Town Campus Concept
The Sugamo Town Campus initiative, which began with the establishment of Sugamo Town Campus V in 2021, views the approximately 2-kilometer stretch from Sugamo Station to Taisho University as a “second campus.” This initiative aims to deepen practical learning by encouraging students to collaborate with local businesses. The campus features various facilities, including the Product Studios I-V for seminars and lectures, as well as the student-run Gamoru-do.
The Role of the Counseling Research Institute and Karugamo Center
The Counseling Research Institute at Taisho University provides practical training and research in general psychological practices. In contrast, the Karugamo Developmental Clinical Center is specifically dedicated to developmental clinical practices, establishing itself as a new division focused on this area of expertise.
