The Launch of the Z Generation Contest 2026
On August 8, 2023, Kitakyushu City hosted the public presentation for the 'Z Generation Contest 2026' at the KOKURA DANCE STATION, marking the beginning of an exciting chance for young innovators to showcase their ideas. The event saw 18 passionate challengers present their visions for the future of Kitakyushu, leading to the selection of three teams who will receive substantial support to bring their ideas to life.
The Contest and Its Participants
This year’s edition of the contest drew significant interest, attracting a record 67 applications, including 32 submissions from outside the city. This overwhelming response highlights the enthusiasm and ambition of the younger generation, who are eager to contribute positively to their communities.
During the presentation, finalists shared diverse and creative concepts pertaining specifically to Kitakyushu’s growth and culture. Ultimately, three projects were chosen to receive not only recognition but also financial assistance, up to ¥3 million, along with mentorship to help implement their innovative ideas.
The Winning Teams
Grand Prize Winner: Takaya Onishi (26 years old)
Project Title: CAMCA – Populating Health and Care from Kitakyushu
Takaya's project addresses a pressing social issue in Kitakyushu, which has one of the highest aging populations among designated cities in Japan. He founded his idea on experiences in the welfare sector, where he witnessed how 'eating' and 'chewing' directly influence personal enjoyment and identity. The initiative will introduce a 'diagnostic gummy' that engages young people in oral care and preventive health, promoting a culture of awareness and joy around health.
Second Place: Kenya Ito (29 years old)
Project Title: 'Kitakyushu MinMin SHOW!' – A Local Board Game
Kenya Ito, a former elementary school teacher, realized that many children were unaware of the local attractions and history despite living in Kitakyushu. His board game aims to educate children about their local environment through play, fostering a sense of pride and cultural appreciation.
Third Place: Khawjaintok Pochara (29 years old)
Project Title: Valentine's Festival – Connecting Hearts in Kitakyushu
As a representative of the Thai community in Kitakyushu, Khawjaintok has developed an event to strengthen ties between locals and Thai citizens through cultural exchange. The initiative includes engaging activities, such as a 'Valentine seal' project, to foster community spirit and warmth during winter.
A Platform for the Future
The Z Generation Contest is not merely an opportunity to present ideas but a launching pad for actual implementation. This year's competition emphasized passion and commitment alongside originality and feasibility. Evaluating the finalists were a panel of expert judges who deeply debated each project, ensuring that the chosen teams were not only creative but also genuinely motivated to enact change.
Involvement from young people is crucial as Kitakyushu aims to become the most supportive city for its youth. The city's initiative does not end with awards; the selected teams will now embark on their journey to transform their visions into reality using the resources and guidance offered.
As a follow-up to previous contest winners who have achieved success in various fields—from vegan cuisine to local tourism collaborations—current participants are excited about the potential impact of their proposals. The projects being undertaken serve as a testament to the importance of encouraging youth innovation in urban development.
Attention Media Professionals
The Z Generation Contest 2026 extends an invitation for in-depth media coverage leading up to its culmination in March 2027, when the selected teams will present their completed projects to the public. Documenting the challenges and victories of these young innovators will provide engaging content about grassroots initiatives. The city welcomes journalists and media inquiries for arranging visitations and interviews with the teams as they work to realize their visions.
