Welcoming Students Back: A Collaborative Effort by Local Partners
As the fall semester kicks off, Texas A&M University-San Antonio is making headlines with its commitment to student support. In an inspiring collaboration, the university has joined forces with local giants, H-E-B and Mars, to help students start their academic year on a positive note. This partnership underscores the importance of community involvement in addressing student needs, particularly in tackling food insecurity that many face during their college years.
On August 21, a day filled with welcome activities, students had the opportunity to collect grocery bags filled with essential food items, courtesy of volunteer employees from H-E-B. The event took place during the university's 'Weeks of Welcome' celebrations, designed to foster community connections among students and introduce them to the resources available on campus.
Nina Garza, a dedicated volunteer from H-E-B and former college student, spoke about her passion for supporting students during this time of transition. “I understand what it means to receive food support; being in college doesn't leave much room for extra expenses. Community means a lot to me,” she expressed, emphasizing the responsibility felt by local employees to help students succeed.
The bags distributed included a variety of shelf-stable food items, with RXBARs provided by Mars reflecting a focus on nutritious options. This gesture not only provided immediate assistance to students in need but also highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the university and its partners. The event symbolized a broader commitment to ensuring that students have access to the essential resources they require for their educational journeys.
President Dr. Salvador Hector Ochoa of Texas A&M-San Antonio acknowledged the vital role that these community partners play in student success. “This generous investment is crucial for students coming from backgrounds with historical barriers to resource access,” Ochoa stated, adding that the support from H-E-B and Mars allows students to prioritize their education without worrying about basic necessities.
To further bolster these efforts, Mars made a significant financial contribution of $5,000 towards the university’s food pantry, known as the General's Store. This vital resource provides free groceries and hygiene products to students in a supportive and confidential environment. As highlighted by President Ochoa, such contributions make a direct impact on the lives of many students, allowing them to focus on their academic achievements rather than their immediate survival needs.
Katie Chain, public affairs manager at H-E-B, reiterated the company’s dedication to supporting students throughout Texas. She shared the organization's philosophy that families shouldn't have to worry about financial burdens during the school year. “We hope that by providing these healthy snacks, we contribute to a stronger start for these students,” said Chain.
Founded in 2009, Texas A&M-San Antonio has always prioritized making higher education accessible, especially for underrepresented communities. Today, it stands as a rapidly growing institution within the Texas A&M University System, championing educational and economic mobility through high-caliber education and community engagement.
As the university embarks on another academic year, the inspiring collaboration with partners like H-E-B and Mars serves as a testament to the power of community support. It not only enriches the lives of students but also reinforces the idea that education is a shared responsibility, one that thrives when communities come together. The mission is clear: when students are well-supported, they can reach their fullest potential, paving the way for a brighter future.
