Boyne Resorts and Consumers Energy: A Sustainable Partnership
Boyne Resorts has taken a significant step towards sustainability by entering into a partnership with Consumers Energy. This collaboration aims to power both the Boyne Mountain Resort and the Bay Harbor Golf Club with clean energy. The initiative aligns with Boyne Resorts' ambitious "ForeverProject," which aims for 100% clean electricity across its operations. This movement also contributes significantly to enhancing Michigan's electric grid with renewable energy.
The partnership marks a new frontier for Boyne Resorts' commitment to environmental responsibility. Beginning in 2028, major electricity accounts at both properties will draw renewable energy sourced from new wind and solar projects developed by Consumers Energy within Michigan. This will not only benefit the resorts but also support local energy needs, as the energy will be fed back into the local electric grid. In addition, Boyne Resorts will be able to claim the Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) associated with these projects, aiding in its efforts to reduce the company's carbon footprint while striving to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2030.
Lauren Snyder, the Vice President of Customer Experience at Consumers Energy, praised the initiative: "We commend Boyne Mountain for making the commitment to match 100% of the energy it uses with renewable energy. Together, we’re making a meaningful impact in adding clean energy capacity to Michigan's grid while fostering economic growth and creating jobs."
Jason Perl, President and General Manager of Boyne Mountain Resort, expressed enthusiasm for the new energy program, emphasizing how it expands their renewable portfolio beyond their current projects which include an existing solar farm and hydroelectric facility. "This allows us to achieve our clean energy goals while reducing our environmental footprint and driving a greener future for our guests, community, and team members," Perl said.
Boyne Mountain Resort is joining a host of notable organizations, including General Motors and Interlochen Center for the Arts, that are participating in Consumers Energy’s Renewable Energy Program. Together, nearly 50 businesses leveraging Consumers Energy's initiatives have committed to almost 700 megawatts of emission-free renewable energy. This substantial increase in renewable generation capacity is projected to power approximately 85,000 homes annually and equate to removing greenhouse gas emissions from over 141,000 cars each year, according to assessments by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Consumers Energy’s Renewable Energy Program is not only designed to help businesses like Boyne Resorts align with sustainability goals but also serves the purpose of fostering economic development in Michigan. The program is comprehensive, offering a local, cost-effective, flexible, and turnkey solution for enterprises eager to commit to a sustainable future. By enrolling in this program, organizations help to green Michigan’s grid while simultaneously generating jobs related to the construction and operation of renewable energy projects.
Consumers Energy is a major player in Michigan's energy landscape, serving natural gas and electricity to over 6.8 million residents. The company's Clean Energy Plan outlines ambitious goals, including eliminating coal as an energy source by 2025, striving for net-zero carbon emissions, and provisioning 90% of customer energy needs through clean sources, notably wind and solar.
