In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, Stockholm Exergi has revealed plans to develop one of the largest carbon capture and storage facilities worldwide. This pioneering project comes as part of Sweden's commitment to tackle climate change and meet its objectives for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The facility, once completed, will permanently store an impressive 800,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, surpassing the emissions produced by Stockholm's road traffic in the same timeframe.

Major Investment for a Green Initiative



The investment required for this ambitious initiative amounts to approximately 13 billion SEK (Swedish Krona). Construction work is slated to kick off immediately, with the aim of having the facility operational by 2028. This milestone underscores Stockholm Exergi’s commitment to becoming a leader in climate solutions and reflects years of relentless effort in developing bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS).

According to Anders Egelrud, CEO of Stockholm Exergi, this investment is a historical moment for both the company and the broader green transition. “Today’s decision signifies that we are moving from planning to action,” he stated. “We are determined to lead the way in permanent carbon removal.”

The project’s funding is backed by a combination of public grants and private investments, including the purchase of negative emission certificates from businesses with significant climate goals. This financial support illustrates the collaborative effort required to tackle the climate crisis effectively.

Location and Technology



The facility will be constructed adjacent to the existing Värtaverket fuel port in Stockholm, which already produces sustainable electricity and heat from biomass and other forestry byproducts. The technology utilized for carbon capture has been in use since the 1970s, and Stockholm Exergi has been operating a pilot facility since 2019, demonstrating its viability.

The carbon captured will be stored deep below the seabed, ensuring its permanence as it mineralizes over time. This proven method not only highlights the technical advancements in carbon capture but also positions Stockholm as a leader in the global effort to mitigate climate change.

A Step Towards the Future



As noted by Carlo Maddalena, a senior director at APG and president of Ankhiale, this decision is a reflection of long-term dedication, perseverance, and collaboration. “Bio-CCS will play a vital role on the road to net-zero, and we are proud to support such a significant global initiative,” he commented.

Furthermore, Stockholm Exergi's commitment complements the city's target of becoming climate-positive by 2030. Emilia Bjuggren, the president of Stockholms Stadshus AB, emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the green transition. “This investment in carbon capture not only reduces emissions but also contributes to a cleaner future for Stockholm,” she said.

As part of this project, Stockholm Exergi has chosen Northern Lights as its partner for CO₂ transport and storage. This collaboration will help scale up Northern Lights' capabilities and establish a foundation for future projects aimed at achieving negative emissions, ultimately positioning the Nordic countries and Europe at the forefront of the global carbon capture industry.
