Stockholm Exergi's Ambitious Carbon Capture Project
On March 27, 2025, Stockholm Exergi made a groundbreaking announcement, revealing plans to construct one of the world's largest facilities dedicated to the capture and permanent storage of biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2). This investment, valued at 13 billion Swedish kronor, represents a significant step towards achieving long-term climate goals for Sweden and the European Union.
The construction of the new facility will commence immediately, with an operational target set for 2028. This facility, located near the Värtaverket energy port in Stockholm, is designed to capture and store a staggering 800,000 tons of CO2 annually. This figure exceeds the carbon emissions generated by Sweden's road traffic during the same timeframe.
Anders Egelrud, CEO of Stockholm Exergi, emphasized the historical significance of this venture, stating, "This is a historic moment for Stockholm Exergi and the green transition. We have worked diligently for years to realize bio-CCS, and today’s decision signifies our shift from planning to action. We are assuming global leadership in the permanent removal industry."
The funding for this ambitious project combines public support with private investments in negative emissions certificates from companies committed to ambitious climate objectives. The selected partner for transporting and storing CO2 is Northern Lights, which will enhance its capacity to facilitate this project and potentially lay the groundwork for a new industry focused on negative emissions.
The technology employed for capturing CO2 has been in use since the 1970s, and Stockholm Exergi has operated a test facility since 2019. Notably, the method for CO2 storage is both effective and rigorously monitored to ensure that the CO2 remains securely encased in the bedrock beneath the seabed, where it will eventually mineralize over time.
Carlo Maddalena, a senior director at APG and chair of Ankhiale, the investment vehicle owning 50% stake in Stockholm Exergi, commented on the significance of the investment, “This decision reflects years of dedication, perseverance, and collaboration. Bio-CCS will play a crucial role in achieving net-zero emissions, and we are proud to support this globally important initiative.”
Citing the launch of Värtaverket nearly 120 years ago, Stockholm Exergi continues to supply heat and electricity while actively working to decrease CO2 levels in the atmosphere. Stockholm is taking the lead in climate action, both domestically and globally. The bio-CCS initiative will be instrumental in achieving Stockholm's goal of becoming a climate-positive city by 2030.
Emilia Bjuggren, chair of Stockholms Stadshus AB, stated, “We must accelerate the transition, and we are determined to do so.”
The construction of this facility aligns with Stockholm’s strategic vision and amplifies efforts to achieve net-zero emissions. Alongside reducing emissions from energy production, the bio-CCS approach promises to significantly enhance climate benefits by removing CO2 from the atmosphere.
In summary, Stockholm Exergi's commitment to constructing a cutting-edge facility for carbon capture and storage showcases its dedication to environmental sustainability and positions Sweden as a leader in innovative climate solutions. This monumental project will not only serve Stockholm but set a precedent for others across the globe aiming for long-term ecological balance.
