Innovative Collaboration Aims to Reduce Emissions



In a significant move towards sustainability, industry leaders Alfa Laval, Outokumpu, and SSAB have embarked on a groundbreaking partnership. The primary aim of this collaboration is to integrate low-emission steel into Alfa Laval’s plate heat exchangers for use in the new Laakso Joint Hospital currently being constructed in Helsinki, Finland. By utilizing SSAB Zero™ steel and Outokumpu Circle Green® stainless steel, this initiative aspires to drastically reduce the carbon footprint of their products by up to 60% throughout their lifecycle.

The collaboration is an excellent illustration of how local initiatives can have a global impact. Laakso Joint Hospital has set ambitious climate goals from the very start of its planning and construction, ensuring that sustainability principles are integrated at every stage. These new heat exchangers will not only provide an efficient solution for the facility’s cooling system but will also keep emissions minimized from product creation to operation.

Julien Gennetier, Vice President of the Energy Division at Alfa Laval, emphasizes the importance of this collaboration. "Our heat exchangers contribute significantly to lowering our customers' emissions in operation," he stated. "By adopting low-emission steel within our production chain, we are addressing emissions right from the upstream processes. This effort exemplifies how local projects can push boundaries toward a larger, global change."

This partnership marks the first time that all three companies are collaborating together, although they have previously worked with each other on various projects. Tony Harris, Head of SSAB Europe, expresses his pride in being part of this sustainable leap. "Every step we take towards a more sustainable future is crucial. Collaborating with innovative partners like Alfa Laval and Outokumpu aids us in building a fossil-free value chain. SSAB Zero™ steel is crafted from recycled materials, using fossil-free energy during production, which brings our emissions nearly down to zero."

Rolf Schencking, President for Advanced Materials at Outokumpu, remarked, "Fulfilling the need for decarbonization is no longer an option; it’s a critical requirement. Goals for Laakso Joint Hospital


As part of the contract signed for this remarkable initiative, five Alfa Laval Concept Zero™ TL10 gasketed plate heat exchangers are slated for installation at the Laakso Joint Hospital in 2025. This installation is expected to generate notable savings on operational costs while also curbing emissions during the upstream production processes. Antti Hyökki, Property Manager at the Real Estate Limited Company Laakso Joint Hospital, highlights the hospital's commitment to sustainability. "At each stage - from design and engineering to construction and maintenance - sustainability has been a priority for us. Collaborating with key suppliers to implement solutions that are not only efficient but also eco-friendly aligns perfectly with our mission."
