Ryoumon, a unique columbarium located in Minamiazabu, Tokyo, is set to host the 6th edition of its celebrated Sakura Festival from March 19 to March 22, 2026. This enchanting event is a perfect blend of tradition and springtime joy, welcoming visitors from all around to enjoy a variety of activities and experiences.

The Essence of Ryoumon

Ryoumon was established in March 2021 as an innovative solution to the challenges of space and generational shifts in managing family graves. Nestled within a historic temple complex, it offers a tranquil setting for remembering loved ones, participating in ceremonial events, and enjoying seasonal festivities. During the Sakura Festival, the beauty of cherry blossoms will be highlighted by stunning floral arrangements managed by the renowned floral artist, Katsushi Akai, transforming the venue into a breathtaking springtime spectacle.

Festival Highlights

Throughout the four-day event, attendees can participate in a variety of programs:
  • - March 19 (Thursday): The festival kicks off with the Spring Higan Ceremony at 11:00 AM, a sacred event that requires prior reservation to ensure an intimate experience.
  • - March 20 (Friday): Enjoy a captivating Koto concert featuring performer Kyoko Fukuda at 2:00 PM, bringing traditional Japanese music to life against the backdrop of beautiful cherry blossoms.
  • - March 22 (Sunday): The final day will feature a special performance at 3:00 PM, combining violin music and Flamenco. Additionally, a balloon art event will be held from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, offering complimentary balloon gifts to attendees, creating delightful memories for families.

The events are designed to engage and uplift both visitors and local community members, making it a perfect outing for all ages. Entrance to the festival and participation in all activities are free of charge, further inviting everyone to partake in this joyous occasion.

A Glimpse into Last Year’s Festival

The previous year’s festival saw a vibrant gathering of visitors, who attended concerts and enjoyed pre-flower viewing experiences within the decorated hall. The event successfully brought together people from various backgrounds, fostering a sense of community and shared connection.

History of Ryoumon

Ryoumon serves as not just a columbarium, but a sanctuary that is accessible and welcoming, addressing the growing concern over grave site management amid an aging population and declining familial generations. Established by a respected lineage within the Jodo sect of Buddhism, Ryoumon has become a comforting space for reflection, remembrance, and reverence, aptly integrating tradition with modern needs for post-life care.
