ABILITY Neurotech Ushers in New Era for ALS Treatment with BCI Clinical Trials
ABILITY Neurotech's Clinical Trial Approval
Pioneering Brain-Computer Interface Technology
In a groundbreaking development, ABILITY Neurotech, a company focused on advancing brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies, has achieved a significant milestone with the approval of its Investigational Medical Device Dossier (IMDD) from the Medical Research Ethics Committee (MREC) NedMec in the Netherlands. This approval enables the company to initiate a clinical trial centered on the chronic implantation of a fully implantable wireless optical-link BCI system specifically designed for patients suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
This trial signifies a critical shift for ABILITY Neurotech, moving from intra-operative testing into a chronic clinical research phase. It marks the inaugural long-term application of their innovative platform in human subjects, a crucial step towards enhancing the quality of life for those with severe neurological impairments.
Study Overview
The upcoming study will be conducted at UMC Utrecht, one of the leading European centers for BCI research. The INTRECOM consortium, which includes UMC Utrecht, the Technical University of Graz in Austria, and CorTec, will facilitate this venture. The aim is to investigate how effectively ABILITY's BCI system can restore communication and speech in patients with ALS, serving as a stepping stone towards the broader application of the technology.
