A New Era for Energy Storage in Japan
In a significant step towards sustainable energy practices,
Nippon Chikudenchi Co., Ltd. has announced the operational launch of its groundbreaking energy storage facility, the
NC Masuda-Higashimachi Storage Station, located in Masuda City, Tottori Prefecture. This project is a collaborative effort with
Digital Grid Co., Ltd. and is set to serve the demand-supply adjustment market starting from
August 18, 2026.
Facility Overview
The
NC Masuda-Higashimachi Storage Station has a rated output capacity of
1,988 kW and a storage capacity of
8,146 kWh, incorporating advanced battery technology from TMEIC and CATL. This facility aims to stabilize regional electricity supply by absorbing and leveling fluctuations in renewable energy output, thereby establishing itself as a model case for future demand-supply adjustment initiatives using grid-scale storage batteries.
Importance of Energy Storage
The increasing adoption of renewable energy sources has created significant fluctuations in power demand and supply across Japan. Addressing these fluctuations is crucial for the country's energy system. Batteries play a pivotal role in bridging the temporal gap between energy generation and consumption, serving as a foundational infrastructure that supports the stabilization of the grid and the sophistication of the electricity market.
Collaborative Approach
In this project, the collaboration between Nippon Chikudenchi and Digital Grid emphasizes several roles:
- - Nippon Chikudenchi focuses on overall project development, operations, and site management.
- - Digital Grid provides support for market entry through aggregating services using its digital platform.
Together, these efforts aim to create a sustainable energy adjustment model that intertwines technology, operations, and market dynamics effectively.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, Nippon Chikudenchi is committed to expanding similar energy storage facilities across different regions of Japan. The company aims to integrate
JEPX (wholesale market), demand-response markets, capacity markets, and disaster relief energy support to establish a cohesive regional energy model. Through its partnership with Digital Grid, Nippon Chikudenchi endeavors to stabilize the use of renewable energy and contribute to a carbon-neutral society.
