Japan's Energy Storage Initiative
Japan is gearing up to enhance its energy stability with the launch of the
NC Kitayamada Teishita Energy Storage Facility, located in Yamaguchi city. Developed by
Nippon Chikudenchi Co., Ltd. in collaboration with
Digital Grid Co., Ltd., this state-of-the-art facility is poised to start operations on
August 18, 2026, specifically targeting the demand-supply adjustment market.
Facility Overview
The facility boasts an impressive capacity of
1,988 kW and
8,146 kWh, utilizing advanced lithium-ion battery technology provided by
CATL. As a model case for grid storage projects, the NC Kitayamada facility aims to stabilize the local power supply by absorbing fluctuations from renewable energy sources.
Background
With the growing adoption of renewable energies, Japan faces the significant challenge of managing the variability in energy supply and demand. Energy storage systems like the NC Kitayamada facility are crucial in bridging the gap between energy generation and consumption. By providing a stable infrastructure for the electricity market, this initiative supports the overall modernization of Japan's energy system.
In this project, Nippon Chikudenchi oversees the full development and operation while Digital Grid facilitates market entry through its aggregation services, utilizing its digital grid platform. This collaboration establishes a sustainable power adjustment model that integrates technology, operations, and market strategies.
Future Developments
Following the launch of the NC Kitayamada facility, Nippon Chikudenchi aims to expand grid storage facilities across Japan. The company plans to establish regional energy models that interconnect the wholesale market, demand-supply adjustment markets, capacity markets, and disaster resilience energy support.
This initiative is in line with the country’s goal to not only maintain energy stability but also deepen the integration of renewable energy resources and contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society through collaboration with Digital Grid.
