Kearsarge Energy: Pioneering Battery Storage Solutions in the Northeast with New Projects

Kearsarge Energy Enhances Battery Storage Leadership

Kearsarge Energy, based in Boston, has set significant milestones in the energy sector as a trailblazer in battery storage installations. With an impressive total of 104 MWH of energy storage capacity since 2019, the firm has progressively scaled its initiatives to optimize renewable energy dynamics in the Northeast.

In 2026, the company announced it would venture into four new Battery Storage Energy System (BESS) projects, amounting to 70 MWH. These upcoming installations signal Kearsarge's aggressive expansion strategy, positioning itself as a formidable force in the growing battery storage market. The planned projects are expected to be accompanied by a further 200 MWH slated for construction in 2027.

Kearsarge's journey began with a standout project in 2019 - the installation of National Grid’s inaugural Distributed Generation (DG) photovoltaic and battery storage system in Amesbury, Massachusetts. Over the past seven years, Kearsarge has sustained its momentum even amid challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing regulatory changes. This resilience highlights Kearsarge’s commitment to promoting battery energy storage adaptations by collaborating closely with utilities, technological partners, and municipal organizations.

The company's approach emphasizes innovative financing methods, stringent safety protocols, and integration of top-tier BESS technologies. As a result, Kearsarge has been able to deliver exceptional performance and value across numerous incentive programs and ISO New England wholesale markets.

Among the 2026 projects is a remarkable focus on public-private partnerships, with construction on sites such as landfills for solar plus storage projects. This approach not only supports renewable energy adoption but also optimizes the usage of underutilized areas, benefitting municipal partners and local communities.

Project Highlights

1. Amesbury, MA (2019) - Kearsarge completed a 3.8 MWH standalone system utilizing a solar array at the Titcomb Pit Landfill. This landmark project, part of the MA SMART Solar Program, facilitated the transition to renewable energy in National Grid territory.

2. Montague, MA (2021) - Implementing a 5.1 MWH system, Kearsarge converted a former burn dump site into a solar-powered energy project, showcasing their dedication to community-oriented public-private partnerships.

3. Haverhill, MA (2021) - A 9.0 MWH project located on a landfill, this system was implemented after stringent environmental assessments, reinforcing Kearsarge’s resolve in maintaining collaborative relations with regulatory bodies like the MA DEP and EPA.

4. Beverly, MA (2022) - Through a partnership with the city, Kearsarge developed six solar projects totaling over 4 MW across city properties, enhancing energy capacity and sustainability.

The upcoming projects in 2026, such as the installations in Concord and Middleborough, will continue to demonstrate Kearsarge's commitment to energy innovation. In Concord, a combination of a BESS and a solar array aims to yield significant local energy production while addressing peak energy demand. Meanwhile, the standalone BESS project in Middleborough is estimated to save the local gas and electric department $12-$15 million over two decades.

Kearsarge Energy remains dedicated to being a pivotal player in the renewable energy realm. By continuing to foster solid partnerships with local municipalities and stakeholders, it not only drives energy storage solutions but also advocates for affordability and sustainability within the communities it serves.

As Andrew Bernstein, Managing Partner of Kearsarge Solar, remarks, "Leading safe and efficient storage adoption has been incredibly rewarding over the past seven years. Through our work with municipalities and local utilities, we have helped those organizations think through how to take advantage of battery storage opportunities in a sustainable way, to meet the accelerating energy demands of their communities and drive affordability for desperately needed new generation."
