YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles and SoCalGas Collaborate to Aid Eaton Fire Recovery Efforts

YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles and SoCalGas Unite for Community Support

In a significant initiative to support communities ravaged by the recent Eaton fire in Southern California, the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles (LA Y) has partnered with Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas). This collaboration aims to extend crucial recovery resources to those affected by the wildfires, marking a pivotal step in community healing and support.

Financial Support and Resources

SoCalGas has notably contributed $400,000 towards the YMCA's response efforts for the Eaton fire, which have become vital as residents begin returning to their homes following evacuation orders. The funding is designed to aid immediate and long-term needs, ensuring that those impacted can access essential services and resources.

The YMCA's offerings have been expanded through this financial support, which includes:
  • - Extended Operating Hours: The LA Y facilities are open longer to accommodate community members.
  • - Free Access to Facilities: Community members can utilize LA Y amenities such as showers, Wi-Fi, food, and water free of charge.
  • - Free Childcare Services: This initiative is available for the children of first responders, essential workers, and families who faced displacement or loss.
  • - Access to Teen Centers: Teenagers can find solace and community interaction at designated centers.

Community Engagement

Victor Dominguez, president and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles, emphasized the organization’s commitment to those affected:
“Recovery will require an ongoing effort from all of us, and we are committed to being there for our community as they navigate this painful chapter.”

In addition to financial assistance, about 100 SoCalGas employees have volunteered their time at the Pasadena-Sierra Madre Y, where they organize thousands of pounds of donations aimed at helping those in need. Essential goods such as food, clothing, personal hygiene items, and various supplies are available at their designated location, proving the importance of community solidarity during times of crisis.

Voices from the Community

This partnership has also garnered praise from local leaders. Pasadena’s mayor, Victor M. Gordo, highlighted the collaborative spirit demonstrated between the YMCA and SoCalGas, expressing his admiration for how the community is banding together during these challenging times.
“This generous donation and dedicated volunteer work represent a shared commitment to assisting those displaced by the fire.”

Supervisor Kathryn Barger emphasized the importance of community partnerships during emergencies, expressing heartfelt gratitude towards both organizations for their collaborative approach to providing support to residents.
“The past weeks have shown the undeniable power of community unity and support to rebuild amidst despair.”

Ongoing Support and How to Help

The YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles, along with SoCalGas, is determined to continue delivering essential services throughout the healing process. This commitment reflects a belief that rebuilding one's life demands not merely immediate assistance but sustained support over time.
