Southwest Airlines Unveils New Cargo Facility in Denver
On June 5, 2025, Southwest Airlines Co. celebrated a significant milestone with the grand opening of its expanded cargo facility at the Denver International Airport (DEN). This nearly 30,000 square foot facility marks a substantial investment in infrastructure, aimed at bolstering the airline's service in one of its busiest markets.
The new facility includes six loading docks, allowing for simultaneous service to multiple customers and significantly increasing storage capabilities. Importantly, it also features double the cooler space dedicated to refrigerated products compared to previous operations. Brian Kilburn, Vice President of Cargo, Provisioning, and Ground Support Equipment, emphasized the facility as a commitment to enhancing service for Denver-area customers, stating, "Southwest Cargo is more than moving freight – we are connecting Denver-area businesses to the global economy."
Denver is a key hub for Southwest Airlines, witnessing nearly 300 daily flights to over 90 North American destinations during peak seasons. Customers leveraging the new cargo service can expect swift and efficient logistics, all delivered with Southwest’s renowned hospitality. Phil Washington, CEO of Denver International Airport, commented on the partnership with Southwest, noting that the new facility not only enhances passenger travel but also expands cargo services critical to the local economy.
To commemorate this facility's opening, Southwest is offering shippers the chance to earn up to two times the Rapid Rewards® points when shipping to or from Denver until December 31, 2025. This promotional initiative is designed to reward businesses that take advantage of the new capabilities in freight transport.
Raymond H. Gonzales, President of the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation, remarked on the broader implications of the new cargo facility, highlighting its role in community empowerment and economic competitiveness. Gonzales stated, "Faster, more reliable cargo access strengthens our supply chain, empowers small businesses, and fuels economic competitiveness."
The new facility is part of a series of investment moves by Southwest in the Denver region, which includes the recent opening of an off-airport training center and the establishment of a maintenance hangar to service operations in Denver and the western U.S. In addition, a 100,000 square foot General Use Building is set to open soon, further supporting the operations of the Provisioning Team and Ground Support Equipment Team.
Ethan Walton, project director at McCarthy Building Companies, highlighted the collaboration involved in the completion of the cargo facility. He mentioned that the project showcased teamwork among various stakeholders, from Southwest Airlines to construction teams, resulting in infrastructure that supports one of the fastest-growing hubs in the United States.
