Commemorating the Pearl Harbor Attack: 83rd Anniversary Ceremony Aboard USCG Cutter WHEC-37

Commemoration of Pearl Harbor Attack

On December 7, 2024, Baltimore's Historic Ships will host the 83rd anniversary ceremony of the Pearl Harbor attack aboard the iconic USCGC WHEC-37. This significant event will start at noon, marking an essential moment in American history—when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. The USCGC WHEC-37, also known as X-TANEY, stands as the last warship afloat that witnessed the attack, making it a poignant site for remembrance.

Each year, this ceremony is dedicated to honoring the veterans and service members who bravely served and sacrificed their lives during World War II. The keynote address will be delivered by CAPT David Obermeier, the commanding officer of the Curtis Bay Coast Guard Yard. The event will also see participation from the Saint Andrew’s Society of Baltimore, members of the USCG Honor Guard, and several dignitaries, including Delegate Nino Mangione of the MD 42a.

Attendees will experience a host of memorial activities, including a bell-tolling ceremony that honors those ships that suffered casualties during the attack, a reverse-on-arms demonstration, and a wreath drop. The ceremony will culminate in a three-volley salute to signify respect for the fallen. Musical performances will also contribute to the solemn atmosphere. Importantly, the ceremony is free for the public, and there will be an opportunity for attendees to tour the USCGC WHEC-37 afterwards. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be live-streamed on the Historic Ships in Baltimore Facebook page.

The USCGC WHEC-37 has a storied history within the United States Coast Guard, having served in various capacities during significant military engagements, including World War II and the Vietnam War. Her service included patrolling efforts, drug interdiction, and search and rescue missions. Decommissioned in 1986 after over five decades of service, the ship was transformed into a memorial and museum in Baltimore, ensuring that the legacy of those who served during the tumultuous years of the 1940s lives on.

Historic Ships in Baltimore is committed to preserving maritime heritage, caring for vessels such as the USS Constellation and USS Torsk, while tirelessly working to raise awareness about the pivotal moments of American history. As part of the Living Classrooms Foundation, the organization empowers local youth through hands-on maritime education and job training programs, instilling a sense of purpose and knowledge about the sea’s rich contributions to our culture.
