DENSO Manufacturing in Athens Achieves Milestone in Solar Energy Generation

DENSO Manufacturing Athens Achieves Solar Energy Milestone

DENSO, a prominent player in the mobility supply sector, is celebrating the successful establishment and operation of a solar energy facility at its Athens, Tennessee manufacturing site. This project, which commenced operations in May 2026, reflects DENSO's commitment to sustainable practices and highlights their push toward integrating more renewable energy into their operations.

Collaboration for Sustainability

The solar facility was developed in collaboration with Solarity, a renewable energy developer, and was also supported by key partners such as the GridMarket clean energy project platform, Athens Utilities Board, and Tennessee Valley Authority. This partnership allowed DENSO to enhance its alternative energy portfolio significantly and marks a pivotal step in their overall sustainability strategy.

Mark Moses, president of DENSO Manufacturing Athens Tennessee (DMAT), stated, "At DMAT, we're always looking for ways to strengthen our operations while being responsible environmental stewards in the Athens community. This project demonstrates how manufacturing and sustainability can work hand in hand. We're proud to generate renewable energy onsite and are grateful to all our partners for helping bring this project to life."

Capacity and Impact

The newly established facility spans 18.8 acres and is home to over 10,000 solar panels. It has a nameplate capacity of 5.25 megawatt alternating current (MWac) and is among the largest on-site renewable energy installations by DENSO in North America. This system is projected to generate enough electricity to cover nearly 14% of DMAT’s total annual energy consumption.

As per reports, the facility has already generated more than 3,200 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity as of August 2026, sufficient to power around 300 average households for a year, while also offsetting approximately 1,125 metric tons of carbon emissions.

Jon Ruge, DENSO’s Vice President for North America Safety, Health, and Environment, emphasized the importance of such projects, stating, "The results at DMAT show how renewable energy investments can support our environmental goals as we develop leading products and help build a more sustainable future for our company and our communities."

Expanding Green Energy Initiatives

The Athens solar initiative is part of DENSO's broader commitment to sustainability across North America. Following the successful launch of a similar solar facility at DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee in Maryville in 2025, the company continues to prioritize renewable energy partnerships and investments that support its mission of reducing emissions and utilizing cleaner electricity.

All these efforts align with DENSO’s broader sustainability goals, which include achieving carbon neutrality across its products, processes, and facilities by 2035. This commitment also aligns with their aim to enhance safety and mobility, contributing to a world with zero traffic fatalities and a more seamless transportation experience.

DENSO's Global Impact

DENSO is headquartered in Kariya, Japan, and stands as a $47.2 billion global mobility supplier, providing advanced technology and components for nearly every vehicle on the road today. With a workforce of over 155,000 employees worldwide, DENSO is at the forefront of developing solutions in areas such as electrification and mobility technology. As part of their ongoing research and development, the company invested around 9.2% of its global sales back into R&D in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, showcasing their dedication to innovation in the automotive sector.

In North American operations, which employ over 23,000 team members across more than 40 sites, DENSO generated $12.7 billion in consolidated sales in the same fiscal year. This growth exemplifies DENSO's resilience and adaptability in the ever-evolving mobility landscape.

Conclusion

DENSO's solar initiative in Athens, Tennessee, is not only a milestone for the manufacturing facility but also a significant stride toward achieving a sustainable future. By investing in renewable energy, DENSO is Leading the path towards environmentally-friendly practices that not only benefit their operations but also contribute positively to the community and the planet.
