Consumer Trust Erodes as Brands Use Inflation to Justify Price Hikes
The financial landscape in the United States is undergoing a dramatic shift, as major brand loyalty comes under fire amid rising inflation. Recent research from Omnisend reveals that an overwhelming 85% of Americans suspect brands are using inflation as a facade to justify inflated prices, negatively impacting the relationship consumers have with companies they once trusted.
The study, which surveyed 1,075 American consumers, uncovered that 67% of respondents have experienced a change in how they perceive brands they previously liked, with over half, or 56%, admitting to halting purchases from those brands altogether. Furthermore, 22% of consumers reported a decline in trust towards these brands that they believed were taking advantage of the economic climate.
This discontent stems from a growing skepticism about corporate pricing strategies. Many consumers perceive current price rises as manipulative rather than necessary. Even amongst price increases, consumers are willing to accept a few valid explanations. For instance, 19% of shoppers expressed readiness to pay more for better product quality, while 16% indicated they are willing to support wage increases for workers. Rising ingredient or material costs were considered valid by 15% of respondents.
Marty Bauer, an Ecommerce Expert at Omnisend, emphasized, "Consumers understand that costs fluctuate. However, they demand transparency regarding why prices are increasing. Clear communication about factors like improved product quality or necessary wage hikes can foster trust, while vague justifications can lead to customer alienation."
As expenses rise, many consumers find themselves seeking short-term financial solutions to manage everyday necessities. According to the survey, 30% of participants admitted to using credit to cover essential expenses such as groceries or utilities within the last three months. Other coping mechanisms included borrowing from friends or family (20%), utilizing Buy Now, Pay Later services (18%), and dipping into savings that were originally allocated for different purposes (17%).
Grocery costs particularly put pressure on consumers, with 30% of respondents identifying them as the expense that feels most "out of control." A significant 65% of those surveyed noted that "shrinkflation"—the practice of reducing product quantities while maintaining prices—is most evident in grocery shopping. Additionally, 29% viewed this strategy of price increase as the most unfair, with 59% recognizing it as a frequent occurrence.
Bauer points out, "The financial safety nets that families once utilized for emergencies have become part of their regular budgeting. When households resort to using credit or borrowed funds for essentials and simultaneously feel they are receiving less value, their confidence in both their financial stability and the brands that are raising prices tends to diminish."

As the economy continues to fluctuate, understanding and addressing the concerns of shoppers will be crucial for businesses looking to sustain their customer base in these challenging times.
