Building Resilience Against Disasters: A Program for Working Parents
In an era marked by frequent and severe natural disasters, the need for robust community preparedness has never been clearer. The Tokyo Disaster Information Magazine, under the management of Sat One LLC, is responding to this urgent need by launching the "Community Disaster Preparedness Web Utilization Program". This initiative aims to equip qualified disaster responders with the skills necessary to instigate real change in their neighborhoods, particularly focusing on working parents and the child-rearing generation.
Purpose and Need for the Program
Despite the increasing number of individuals obtaining disaster responder certifications, many find themselves uncertain about the next steps. Questions such as, "What should I focus on next?" and "How can I apply what I've learned in my community?" are common. IT-savvy professionals, in particular, possess valuable skills for data collection, analysis, and communication, yet these strengths are not being fully leveraged in local disaster strategies. This program is designed to bridge that gap, enabling participants to actively contribute to their communities' preparedness initiatives.
A Shift Towards Proactive Disaster Preparedness
The Cabinet Office and Tokyo Metropolitan Government have released estimates of potential damages from a major earthquake in the Tokyo area, painting a sobering picture of the challenges we may face. However, the Tokyo Disaster Information Magazine is here to change the narrative: "We can alter our future through our actions." The program emphasizes the critical importance of transitioning from a focus on past casualties to proactive measures aimed at increasing survival rates through effective disaster preparedness practices.
Program Overview: Learning through Five Sessions
The "Community Disaster Preparedness Web Utilization Program" comprises five sessions designed to educate participants about the tools and strategies for enhancing local preparedness through the Disaster Preparedness Web provided by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED).
1.
Kickoff Event - Participants will attend a keynote lecture by a NIED representative to understand the significance of the Disaster Preparedness Web. This event will clarify the vital role disaster responders with IT skills play in local preparedness efforts.
2.
Workshops (Sessions 2-4) - These hands-on workshops will guide participants in using the Disaster Preparedness Web, tailoring solutions to meet community needs, and developing relevant content and operational strategies. Attendees will gain practical skills necessary for disseminating critical disaster information.
3.
Presentation Event - In the final session, participants will share the Disaster Preparedness Web pages they have developed, showcasing their accomplishments and discussing future directions for their communities.
Kickoff Event Details
The kickoff event, tailored for those certified as disaster responders yet unsure of their next steps, will take place on July 17, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Tokyo Conference Room in NIED. The event will be limited to five participants, ensuring personalized attention and engagement. Attendees are encouraged to bring laptops and writing materials for this interactive session.
Keynote Addresses
- - Tokyo Disaster Information Magazine Executive: Sharing insights from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, stressing the importance of enhancing the survival rate through clear, actionable steps.
- - Professor Yoshinori Kyuta (Kogakuin University): A special lecture focusing on how disaster responders can effectively harness the Disaster Preparedness Web to bolster community resilience.
Post-event, a video archive will be made available to disseminate the program's key insights widely, further promoting the importance of utilizing the Disaster Preparedness Web.
Empowering Future Collaboration
This initiative aspires not only to enhance individual skill sets but also to cultivate a movement within communities where knowledge and preparedness grow exponentially – from one individual to five, then five to more. By establishing periodic events, the program aims to solidify the Disaster Preparedness Web as the first step for qualified responders post-certification. It transforms the conversation from a focus on potential losses to actionable steps that can lead to survival and resilience.
Our Commitment
As we work alongside working parents and engaged members of the community, our objective remains clear: to surpass governmental projections of casualties through proactive and collaborative disaster preparedness efforts. Together, we can achieve a significant milestone in safeguarding our communities and ensuring that the casualties remain at zero.
