The Success of the IP Net5.5G Smart Network Summit: A Foundation for AI-Driven Growth

The Role of Secure IP Networks in the Age of AI

On October 15, 2026, the Global Ultra-Broadband Forum (UBBF) 2026 hosted the successful IP Net5.5G Smart Network Summit in Vienna. This pivotal gathering brought together leading minds in telecommunications to discuss the future of network security within the evolving context of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The event showcased insights from GSMA Intelligence, which launched its latest white paper on cybersecurity that centers on topics such as network safety and resilience, specifically tailored to support operators in leveraging new business monetization models.

The summit emphasized the growing need for global operators to establish secure and resilient network foundations. It underscored the importance of adapting to emerging security challenges brought forth by AI advancements. As highlighted by representatives from ITU-T SG13 and hybrid cyber-testing experts from AV-TEST, the rapid development of AI technologies has intensified the scale and sophistication of cyber threats. Their discussions pointed out that AI has disrupted the traditional balance of offensive and defensive security strategies, making it imperative to embed security into network architecture from the outset.

In unveiling the white paper on cybersecurity target architecture for telecom, GSMA Intelligence highlighted two fundamental tenets crucial for modern telecommunications networks:

1. Native Security: The concept that security must be integrated into network elements from design through to deployment and operation.
2. Deep Defense: The provision of layered protection against complex and enduring threats based on domain specifics.

Moreover, the white paper raised alarms about future threats tied to quantum computing’s ability to decrypt data. It warned that cybercriminals are already hoarding encrypted information to exploit it once quantum decryption methods are fully developed. Consequently, there is an urgent necessity for operators to implement new cryptographic algorithms and cybersecurity practices to safeguard against potential quantum computer assaults.

In response to these significant challenges, ITU-T SG13 and the WBBA jointly inaugurated the “Building Resilient and Secure IP Networks Together” initiative. This program urges global operators to elevate the security and resilience of their networks, ensuring high reliability and service continuity within the AI era.

During the summit, Leon Wang, Huawei’s President of Data Communications Products, remarked on the evolution of AI from a simple efficiency tool to a core driver for network monetization, stressing that ongoing growth demands a secure and resilient backbone. John Cai, Vice President of Data Communications Product Line at Huawei, elaborated on the upgraded Huawei NG WAN solution that addresses these needs.

Additionally, executives from major global operators shared their strategic plans and innovative methods for bolstering network security resilience and implementing autonomous networks. The President of the IPv6 Forum presented recognition awards to representatives from outstanding operators, including the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt, honored with the “Pioneering Policy Award for National Network Resilience.” According to Ing. Shamroukha, the Executive President and CEO of NTRA, this recognition was for exceptional efforts in constructing resilient and secure IP networks while promoting online child safety initiatives.

This accolade underscores an industry-wide consensus on the necessity of ensuring service continuity through robust security and resilience, as well as fostering business growth through intelligent network solutions.

The IP Net5.5G Smart Network Summit has not only set a clear trajectory for advancing security in the AI era but also signaled that global telecommunications networks are accelerating their transition into a new intelligent landscape characterized by quality, security, and resilience. With such collaborative efforts in place, the blueprint for a secure digital future is now within reach.
