Symposium on Educational Reform: Building a Hopeful Future for Japan's Youth

Shaping a Bright Future for Japan's Youth

On May 12, 2025, the 'Educational Reform National Movement' will convene its symposium titled "Creating a Bright Japan Where Youth Can Hold Hopes for the Future" at Shibusawa Hall in Marunouchi, Tokyo. This initiative is spearheaded by the movement's executive board, led by Secretary-General Hideo Okubo. The symposium aims to address the critical need for reform in university entrance exams and the foundational structure of higher education, engaging with stakeholders from both the economy and educational sectors.

As Japan grapples with challenges posed by a declining population and rapid technological advancements, the shortcomings of the existing educational framework have become increasingly chronic. With the current university entrance exam system emphasizing rote knowledge, the cultivation of creativity, diversity, and humanity in our future workforce remains challenging. Recognizing these systemic flaws, the 'Educational Reform National Movement' frames the call for university entrance exam reform and the broader educational paradigm as pivotal points for national transformation, advocating for a grassroots movement that fosters awareness and action.

Expert Insights on Educational Futures

The symposium will feature keynote speeches from notable experts. Akio Mimura, Chair of the Population Strategy Council and former Chairman of Nippon Steel Corporation, and Ken Sakumura, Emeritus Professor at the University of Tokyo, will present their insights on the future of education in the age of generative AI and the pressing demographic issues facing Japan. Their contributions will provide a thorough examination of the intersection between education reform and societal needs, offering perspectives that are critical for our times.

Following the keynote addresses, the movement will outline its action plan, emphasizing a transition from a knowledge-centric approach to an education system that nurtures human capabilities and creativity. This initiative seeks to empower those who are already aware of the issues while prompting awareness among those yet to recognize the urgency of reform. By cultivating collective consciousness and facilitating dialogue, the movement aims to stimulate a broader social transformation toward educational reform.

Achieving educational reform requires not only changes within schools but also a shift in the collective consciousness of society, which includes businesses, local communities, and families. The upcoming symposium is envisioned as the first step in this journey—a platform where diverse stakeholders can align on a new educational vision for Japan.
