A Special Lecture on Global Experiences
On July 8th, a significant event took place at Zero High, where renowned guest speaker
Rui Shikada shared her life journey and insights on the theme of "Shining Freely in the World." With a background that spans across various continents and cultures, Shikada's guidance is poised to inspire the new generation of students.
Rui Shikada, a native of
Chiba Prefecture, Japan, began her journey by studying in the United States during her high school years. This experience not only broadened her perspective but also instilled in her a deep understanding of diversity. After graduating from
Tsuda University with a degree in the field of information mathematics, she embarked on a career as a system engineer at NEC. However, a pivotal life change saw her transitioning into the bridal industry, showcasing her versatility and ability to adapt to different challenges.
Now based in
Cebu Island, Shikada has become a general manager at a language school that facilitates parent-child study abroad programs, supporting numerous families traveling from Japan. Her personal journey of relocating to the Philippines and embracing new cultures serves as a testament to the power of taking risks and stepping outside one’s comfort zone. In 2024, she was recognized as a finalist at the
Mrs. Contest World Championship, further cementing her commitment to inspiring women.
Key Takeaways from the Lecture
During the special class, Shikada emphasized the belief that "English is a tool that moves one's life forward, and it should not merely be a goal in itself." Drawing from her own experiences—ranging from her high school adventures abroad to her burgeoning career in Cebu—she discussed the importance of stepping out of one’s comfort zone.
In her enlightening address, Shikada conveyed that the ability to speak English is enhanced by actively engaging with the world. Students were captivated by her message that rather than waiting to achieve fluency before taking on challenges, it is the act of venturing out that cultivates one’s language skills. This perspective resonated deeply, offering practical advice on how to approach language learning and personal development.
Towards the end of the lecture, Shikada prompted students with thought-provoking questions about their aspirations and role models. This interaction encouraged students to consider their potential futures through the lens of learning English and exploring international horizons. This exercise not only made the topics more relatable but also sparked critical thinking about their own lives and the possibilities that lie ahead.
