Overview of Driving Skills Survey Results
Park24 Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo, has released the findings from a recent survey on driving techniques, conducted exclusively for its Times Club members. The survey reveals important insights regarding driver confidence, challenges, and learning techniques among Japanese drivers.
Key Highlights of the Survey
1. More than 20% of those who drive less than once a month consider themselves not proficient in driving.
2. The top three challenging driving skills identified are parallel parking, reverse parking, and navigating narrow roads.
3. Nearly half of the respondents practice parking skills, while many utilize social media to learn parking techniques.
Each month, Park24 shares survey findings related to cars and traffic. The current month focuses on driving techniques, and the detailed results are as follows.
Driver Self-Assessment
Over a quarter (28%) of respondents believe they are good drivers, while 15% consider themselves not skilled. The remaining majority (56%) see themselves as average. Notably, those who drive two to three times a month perceive their driving ability as better than those who drive once a month or less. Among the latter group, over 20% categorize themselves as not proficient, indicating that limited driving experience often correlates with decreased confidence in driving skills.
Challenging Skills
The survey first examined which driving skills drivers feel most competent in. Across the board, 45% cited slowing down and stopping as their strong suits, followed by reverse parking at 43% and lane changing at 35%. Interestingly, those who rated themselves as good drivers identified reverse parking as their top skill (55%), followed closely by slowing down (47%) and lane changing (46%).
In contrast, the top three least proficient skills identified by the participants were parallel parking (57%), reverse parking (33%), and navigating narrow roads (also 33%). A significant finding reveals that over 62% of those who rated themselves as not skilled struggle with parallel parking, indicating that this maneuver is particularly challenging for drivers
Learning and Improving Skills
To improve their parking skills, around half of the respondents have engaged in practice, with 20% practicing alone, 19% receiving guidance from friends or family, and 7% attending driving school sessions focused on parking. Additionally, many respondents reported learning techniques through social media and platforms like YouTube, showcasing the growing trend of digital learning in driving skills.
The survey highlighted that even among those who considered themselves proficient drivers, nearly half actively sought practice to enhance their parking abilities. This reinforces the notion that consistent practice is vital in building confidence in driving, especially concerning parking skills.
The survey encapsulated a clear theme: whether a driver identifies as skilled or unskilled, parking emerges as a common area of concern. To assist its members, Park24 offers the “Times Lesson,” where certified instructors provide personalized one-on-one parking guidance. Furthermore, they have made instructional videos available on the Times Club official site, enabling anyone looking to enhance their skills to easily access valuable resources.
