In a bid to foster a nurturing environment for expecting mothers, Kuon Co., Ltd. has recently revamped their online community dedicated to prenatal support, in collaboration with the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Tokyo. The new platform, launched on November 18, 2025, seeks to connect women who share similar feelings and provide a safe space for community engagement during pregnancy.
Studies indicate that many pregnant women experience significant depressive symptoms, which can lead to adverse effects on both their mental health and fetal development. Research has shown that untreated mental health issues during pregnancy can have long-term implications for the child's future growth and development. With the pregnant population being more open to health-related interventions during this time, addressing depression proactively is essential. The reimagined "Pregnancy Life Community" aims to provide this crucial support.
The community's enhancement involves converting a previously limited-access platform into a more open resource, allowing more expecting mothers to engage and benefit from peer support throughout their pregnancy journey. The initiative is backed by ongoing research under the expert guidance of Professor Daisuke Nishi from the University of Tokyo. The objective of this research is to reduce depressive symptoms during pregnancy and postpartum phases through reliable community support.
From the beginning of the initiative, survey participants were monitored at three critical points: before joining, three months later, and three months after giving birth. This assessment track focused on measurements such as feelings of isolation and overall well-being. Preliminary analysis revealed a correlation between community engagement and improvements in mental health, strengthening the case for this accessible and supportive online environment.
Professor Nishi shared his insights, stating that pregnancy can be a challenging time due to hormonal fluctuations and lifestyle changes. These factors contribute to heightened psychological stress, impacting maternal mental health that can affect parenting skills and child development. While methodologies like Internet-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy have been shown as effective, many women may not have access to such resources or feel overwhelmed by their options. Therefore, creating a supportive structure that caters to various needs is critical.
To this end, this project focuses on peer support, where mothers support one another in an online context. This approach is part of a broader strategy to provide universal prevention of pregnancy-related depression. Traditional interventions have often leaned towards methods like iCBT; however, there remains a pressing need for a more organic and sustainable support system.
The online peer support is envisioned as a method to provide a voice to mothers during their prenatal journey, offering them the chance to connect with those who understand their experiences. By gathering participant feedback, the community intends to identify key elements that contribute to the prevention of depressive symptoms, ultimately working towards a society where every mother feels confident and supported in her parenting journey.
As the community evolves, the staff of the "Pregnancy Life Community" extends a heartfelt message to all expecting mothers. They recognize the complexity of emotions during this phase, admitting that even when joy and anxiety collide, it is essential to have a space to express oneself freely. The staff encourages participants to share their stories, no matter how small, assuring that these experiences can help create a supportive and nurturing environment. It’s a platform for mothers to visit at their leisure—an inviting 'home' to share thoughts and find solace.
Since its inception, the "Kizuna Community"—the foundation from which the "Pregnancy Life Community" emerged—has aimed to establish camaraderie among over two million participants, including more than 70 organizations and municipalities. Through dynamic exchanges themed around connection and collaboration, this endeavor facilitates a two-way dialogue to co-create value based on the voices of everyday people.
Kuon Co., Ltd., which established the "Kizuna Community" in January 2020, has a rich history of fostering relationships between corporations, municipalities, and citizens through online platforms. The company, founded in 1996, offers extensive services in community building and consulting, helping over 300 businesses and municipalities foster connections and address challenges using advanced data science practices, including international patents.
