Tokyo's Experiential Program Connects High School Students with Logistics and IT

A Unique Vocational Experience: Bridging Logistics and IT for Students

In August, the Pal System Union conducted an engaging vocational experience program aimed at middle and high school students in Tokyo. This event, taking place on August 4th and 5th, welcomed seven students from grades 7 to 12. They explored a state-of-the-art logistics and IT facility in Inagi City, where they learned about the inner workings of co-operative delivery services. For many participants, it was an eye-opening experience that ignited their curiosity about the logistics sector that usually operates behind the scenes.

Experiencing the Lifeblood of the Economy

The vocational training was made possible by the Inagi Office Center, which organizes various work experiences throughout the year for Pal System members. The center showcased real sorting machines used in logistics operations, supplemented by original videos, panels, and tablets to explain the delivery process. Supported by the Inagi City Board of Education, this program aimed to give students a deeper understanding of the information systems that underpin logistics.

On the first day, students examined the differences between retail stores and delivery services. They explored the layout of a store and discussed the psychological factors influencing product placement. For instance, they discovered that delivery services minimize food waste by ordering only the necessary quantities post-consumer order. With about 160,000 order data points generated daily, this logistic model is crucial for sustainability.

Students engaged with a simulated information system via tablets, allowing them to visualize how data flows within the logistics process. They even got hands-on experience sorting items as a team, competing on speed, which provided insight into the often-invisible logistics strategies.

Reducing Food Waste through Innovative Solutions

On the second day, the focus shifted to discussing methods to alleviate food waste within delivery systems. The students engaged in workshops where they brainstormed about causes of food waste, addressing various aspects from raw material production to logistics issues.

Discussions revealed that extreme weather conditions, manufacturing mishaps, and supply chain disruptions can all contribute to food loss. Pal System demonstrated their commitment to tackling these issues by collaborating with producers and supporting organizations dedicated to community aid, utilizing surplus goods effectively.

In addition to combating food waste, Pal System works alongside various stakeholders on initiatives around reuse, recycling, and plastic reduction. These active measures align with the voices of Pal System members, reflecting a cooperative approach rooted in community connection. Students were encouraged to consider how they could tackle local issues, like waste management and promoting recycling, founding small cooperatives based on shared interests.

Inspiring Future Careers Through Collaboration

As the program concluded, students were urged to contemplate the essence of work, emphasizing the pivotal role of collaboration in problem-solving. This experience aimed to inspire them to leverage teamwork in their future careers and recognize how their efforts could contribute to wider societal goals.

In closing, participants were reminded that true work involves cooperation among individuals to address challenges, urging them to think about who they would partner with when faced with personal obstacles in life.
