Empowering Change: National Heritage Academies and United Way
National Heritage Academies (NHA), a prominent network of public charter schools, is thriving through its impactful partnership with United Way via the innovative Student United Way program. This initiative is more than just a school project; it’s a platform designed to equip high school students with the necessary skills to lead meaningful change in their communities.
The Birth of Student United Way
Launched three years ago at Grand River Preparatory (GRP) and Wellspring Preparatory High Schools, Student United Way promotes philanthropy, volunteerism, and advocacy among students. With initial support from Members First Credit Union, the program aims to not only foster community involvement but also open up pathways into nonprofit careers.
Hannah Reynolds, an alum of GRP and currently a staff member at United Way, highlights the pivotal nature of high school years as a time for students to explore their potential. She states, "This program gives students a seat at the table to drive the change they want to see, and it also helps them see themselves working in nonprofits."
Hands-On Leadership Opportunities
Over the past three years, Student United Way has successfully engaged students in various activities that have honed their leadership skills:
- - Volunteering for VITA: Students assisted families earning under $65,000 with preparing free tax returns, making a tangible impact during tax season.
- - Collaborative Initiatives: In partnership with the West Michigan Center for Arts and Technology (WMCAT), students have pitched community-driven ideas that address local needs.
- - Brand Development: Students designed the Student United Way brand, establishing a unique identity that resonates across all promotional materials.
- - Summer Engagement: To sustain interest and involvement, summer sessions were introduced, keeping the momentum alive even when school is not in session.
The highlight of these efforts occurred at GRP, where students presented their projects directly to WMCAT leaders. Their input led to approved initiatives aimed at supporting nonprofit goals locally, an achievement that reflects their capabilities and commitment.
Student Voices Matter
For students involved, the transformation has been profound. Elizabeth Ta, a senior and founding member of Student United Way, emphasizes the program's role in her personal growth: "It's been a really great experience. One of the most important things I've gained is public speaking. I've presented in front of people I never would have otherwise, and that’s made me much more confident. It’s also opened my eyes to nonprofits as a possible career path."
Teachers and administrators have recognized the program’s influence as well. GRP Principal Mike Irwin praises the partnership, stating, "We are super excited to continue our partnership with Student United Way. The program provides our students with an opportunity to serve their community and find meaningful pursuits in their lives."
A Bright Future Ahead
Looking forward, the Student United Way is set to expand, with plans to incorporate additional high schools into its network. This expansion signifies growing recognition of the value and success of the initiative, with Wyoming High School expected to join in Fall 2026.
As the program enters its third year, excitement is palpable. Hannah Reynolds underscores the achievements of students, stating, "Students are proving every day that their voices matter now and that they already have the power to create lasting change."
A Commitment to Education and Community
National Heritage Academies is dedicated to serving over 68,000 students across nine states through a network of 103 tuition-free, public charter schools. Their mission encapsulates a focus not just on academic success but also on community engagement, empowerment, and leadership development. For more information about NHA and its programs, visit
