Capell Barnett Matalon & Schoenfeld LLP Welcomes Dr. Ellen Clark Clémot

Capell Barnett Matalon & Schoenfeld LLP (commonly referred to as CBM&S Law) is excited to announce a significant addition to its team: Dr. Ellen Clark Clémot. Dr. Clémot joins as Counsel for the firm's Religious Organizations Practice Group, effective January 31, 2026.

Unique Expertise

With an impressive background, Dr. Clémot possesses over 20 years of legal experience coupled with more than a decade of pastoral leadership in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Her combination of skills makes her uniquely equipped to understand the complexities and needs of faith-based organizations. As a Senior Pastor and Head of Staff for over 12 years, Dr. Clémot has been at the forefront of the challenges and possibilities that religious organizations encounter daily.

Renato Matos, the Managing Partner at CBM&S Law, expressed enthusiasm about Dr. Clémot's arrival, stating, "Her dual perspective as both a seasoned attorney and a faith leader is truly exceptional. Ellen's ability to align legal strategy with the mission and real-world needs of religious organizations will be a tremendous asset to our clients and our firm."

Focus Areas

Dr. Clémot's practice will focus on assisting faith-based organizations in navigating New York's religious and not-for-profit corporation law. She possesses a particular interest in revenue-generating strategies that aid churches in repurposing their assets for community-oriented projects. This includes working on leases, affordable housing development, and innovative uses for real estate, which ultimately transforms congregations into vibrant centers for worship and outreach.

Academic and Professional Contributions

In addition to her legal and pastoral duties, Dr. Clémot serves as an adjunct professor at Princeton Theological Seminary, focusing on church governance. Her recognition extends beyond academia, as she is a sought-after speaker on issues related to housing and migration. Furthermore, she is an award-winning author, having penned the book "Discerning Welcome" (published by Cascade in 2022), which thoughtfully examines U.S. asylum law through the perspectives of faith and ethics.

Dr. Clémot holds multiple degrees, including a J.D. from NYU School of Law, a B.A. (magna cum laude) from Brown University, a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from Duke University.

Commitment to Faith-Based Organizations

Dr. Clémot's addition to CBM&S Law reinforces the firm’s dedication to providing knowledgeable legal counsel tailored to the unique needs of faith-based organizations.
