Letter Carriers Honored for Heroic Acts at NALC Luncheon
Letter Carriers Recognized as Heroes of the Year
On March 20, 2025, a special luncheon in Washington, D.C., will spotlight the incredible heroism of several letter carriers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Members of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will be celebrated for their remarkable actions during life-threatening situations and their dedication to serving their communities.
Among those honored is Tesfaye Deyasso, who demonstrated unparalleled courage in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. He acted swiftly to help rescue a man trapped in a car that crashed and caught fire, managing to extricate him mere moments before flames engulfed the vehicle. Deyasso’s bravery has earned him the title of 2025 National Hero of the Year.
In the Eastern Region, Brian Meyers Sr. from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, exemplified heroism when he tackled a man threatening another individual with a knife. By restraining the assailant until law enforcement arrived, Meyers showcased quick thinking and valor in a critical moment.
One of the most touching stories comes from Flint, Michigan, where Rungphet Bodnar noticed a child in distress, caught by a dog. Amidst the chaos of children screaming at a bus stop, Bodnar resolved the situation using her dog spray to free the girl, who had to undergo multiple surgeries afterward but is now back in school. Bodnar's decisive action illustrates the true spirit of heroism that consistently shines within letter carriers.
The recipients of the Humanitarian of the Year award highlight the compassionate side of these professionals. Matthew Ross Sr., from Syracuse, New York, played a vital role in improving the holiday season for less fortunate children. He navigated the challenges faced by families in transition and ensured that these children received much-needed gifts, helping to brighten their lives during pivotal moments.
In addition to these remarkable individuals, the luncheon will also recognize several other carriers who demonstrated extraordinary commitment and courage.
