Duke Energy's Ongoing Response to Power Outages in Ohio and Kentucky
On August 11, 2026, Duke Energy faced a significant challenge as severe storms rolled through Greater Cincinnati, resulting in widespread power outages affecting over 180,000 customers. As of late Tuesday, approximately 160,000 customers continued to grapple with power loss, including a staggering 134,000 in southwestern Ohio and 26,000 in Northern Kentucky.
Duke Energy crews, trained to act swiftly and safely, began assessing damage and clearing debris almost immediately after the storm hit. They aimed to restore power to affected areas as quickly as possible. However, obstacles such as fallen trees, shattered poles, and damaged infrastructure have complicated restoration efforts.
In response to the devastation, Andy Cassidy, Duke Energy's storm director, emphasized the readiness of their teams. “Our crews will be working around the clock to restore power as quickly and safely as possible for our customers,” Cassidy stated. Despite their preparedness, the extent of the damage exceeded expectations, and with another wave of severe weather looming, they braced for additional challenges ahead.
Duke Energy currently services around 765,000 electric customers in Ohio and 155,000 in Kentucky. The company has been utilizing cutting-edge self-healing technology to reroute power around damaged areas, enabling them to restore service to some customers even as they navigate hazardous road conditions. In scenarios where conditions remain unsafe for their workers—such as high winds over 30 mph—progress has been impeded, particularly in employing bucket trucks for elevated tasks.
As they conduct ongoing assessments and repairs, Duke Energy remains committed to keeping customers informed. The company frequently updates the estimated times of restoration through their Outage Alerts system and an interactive Outage Map available on their website and mobile app.
In the wake of these outages, safety is a top priority. Duke Energy advises customers to keep a safe distance from downed power lines and any areas where lines may be sagging. They recommend reporting any hazards by contacting 911 and Duke Energy directly to ensure swift action. Furthermore, it’s crucial for residents to clear the roads for utility trucks and emergency response vehicles and to treat intersections with nonworking signals as four-way stops.
The recent storms have encouraged Duke Energy to execute its energy modernization strategy. The company is focused on upgrading the electric grid and enhancing efficient energy resources to meet growing demands and cope with future crises more effectively. With over 8.7 million customers served across various states, including North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, and Kentucky, Duke Energy continues its mission to power communities while prioritizing customer safety and satisfaction.
For ongoing updates, customers can access the Duke Energy smartphone app via the Apple Store or Google Play.
As the restoration efforts continue, the company expresses its gratitude to customers for their patience and understanding amidst these trying times. Duke Energy remains committed to restoring electricity safely and expediently as they work tirelessly to restore normalcy to affected areas.
