Celebrating Global Volunteers: Habitat for Humanity Honors Outstanding Contributions to Affordable Housing

Habitat for Humanity International Honors Global Volunteers

In a landmark year for global service, Habitat for Humanity International proudly recognizes the exceptional contributions of 44 volunteers from 21 nations. Their unwavering commitment, leadership, and innovative ideas are driving significant progress in ensuring access to safe and affordable housing worldwide. This acknowledgment comes during the organization's 50th anniversary and coincides with the United Nations' International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development.

Jonathan Reckford, the CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, expressed the profound impact of volunteers, stating, "One volunteer's impact can extend across a community, inspire others, change systems, and open doors to housing solutions that endure." This powerful reminder underscores the vital role that each individual plays in making a difference. Volunteers have been instrumental in shaping Habitat’s first 50 years and continue to pave the way for the future.

Celebrating Diverse Contributions

The honorees this year exhibit a diverse array of skills, experiences, and perspectives. For instance, Fadi Miqdady from Jordan spearheaded efforts to construct 78 new homes and rehabilitate more than 370, simultaneously improving water access for isolated communities. Meanwhile, Sean Ro from South Korea initiated running and walking campaigns that engaged tens of thousands and raised around $5.7 million to support housing initiatives.

In Kenya, Roseline Asena enabled community members in the Mukuru Informal Settlement to advocate for better housing, integrating local priorities into national discussions. Furthermore, Víctor Oswaldo Martínez Flores, who played a significant role in establishing Habitat for Humanity in Guatemala, remains a dedicated volunteer after 47 years.
