An Inclusive Step Toward LGBTQ+ Empowerment
On
October 11, 2025, FamilyMart and Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan are set to host a joint event in celebration of
International Coming Out Day. This collaboration marks the third year of partnership between the two companies, emphasizing their committed support for the LGBTQ+ community. The event will be attended by Miho Yakushi, director of the certified NPO ReBit, who will share insights on the theme of "Acting and Spreading Awareness," encouraging employees to transform their learnings into tangible actions.
The International Coming Out Day serves as a global recognition and celebration for individuals who have publicly expressed their sexuality. It aims to promote increased visibility and understanding of LGBTQ+ issues but does not advocate or obligate anyone to come out.
With research suggesting that nearly
9.7% of individuals identify as LGBTQ+ in Japan, the importance of allies in fostering an inclusive society cannot be overstated. Since 2023, over
2,600 employees from both companies have actively participated in initiatives fostered by the theme of "Harnessing Diversity."
The event will feature a talk by Yakushi, focusing on significant topics like coming out stories, experiences of SOGI harassment (harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity), and personal life narratives of LGBTQ+ individuals. This engagement aims to provide real perspectives and insights that empower participants to consider their roles as allies and encourage them to share their personal action plans. The goal is to spark a movement that encourages every individual to make concrete commitments in their daily lives, expanding the network of allies advocating for LGBTQ+ rights.
