Frozen Treats: America's Year-Round Dessert of Choice and Budget-Friendly Snack

Frozen Treats: America's Year-Round Dessert of Choice

With increasing temperatures or not, ice cream and frozen novelties have become more than just summer treats in the United States. According to a recent survey by the National Frozen Refrigerated Foods Association (NFRA), a whopping 72% of Americans say that having frozen treats at home offers them a convenient and cost-effective dessert option. This shift in consumer behavior shines light on a broader trend: frozen desserts are not only easy to stock up on but are also perceived as being more affordable than dining out for dessert.

A New Perspective on Dessert

For many, dessert no longer has to mean a trip to a restaurant or bakery. The survey reveals that nearly three out of four adults appreciate the availability of frozen goodies in their freezers, ready to be savored at any moment. Tricia Greyshock, the President and CEO of NFRA, emphasizes that frozen treats allow for spontaneous enjoyment without the need for elaborate planning or hefty expenses. Whether it is indulging in a scoop of ice cream after dinner or savoring a fruit pop during a hot afternoon, these frozen delights cater to our comfort food cravings at home.

Accessibility Matters

Interestingly, the convenience of ice cream and frozen products isn’t just limited to special occasions. The survey found that many consumers purchase frozen treats even before a craving hits. Up to 43% say they mainly buy them during hot weather, while 35% do so for an easy dessert option. Approximately 31% of shoppers are motivated by sales or promotions, highlighting how price sensitivity plays a role in these purchases. In today's inflationary times, those looking to save a few bucks are opting for a little something sweet from the freezer aisle.

Portion Control and Preferences

Interestingly, the type and size of these frozen items have transformed consumer expectations and desires. Seven out of ten individuals asserted that they would prefer a smaller size of something they truly love over a larger portion of a less favored dessert. This has led to more interest in snack-sized bars, mini cones, and other portion-controlled products that fit into a healthier lifestyle without compromising on satisfaction. A significant two-thirds of respondents also said they would feel more inclined to keep frozen treats at home if they came in convenient serving sizes, demonstrating a shift toward a preference for quality over quantity.

The Rise of Seasonal Flavors

While classic flavors remain a staple, consumers are increasingly curious about seasonal and limited-time offerings. In fact, around 64% of survey participants expressed a desire to try new summer flavors. Moreover, many are interested in exploring novel formats of frozen desserts, like cones, bars, sandwiches, and bite-sized treats. These trends not only satisfy diverse tastes but also align with popular social media themes, encouraging people to experiment and share their experiences.

Familiarity Breeds Confidence

In an era of rapid innovation in the freezer aisle, well-known brands play a key role in encouraging consumers to try new products. Approximately 65% of respondents indicated that they are more likely to try a newer item if it comes from a trusted brand. The emphasis on clear nutritional information also cannot be understated; 66% of consumers desire straightforward comparisons between the various frozen options in terms of nutrition, sugar content, and ingredients.

A Little Joy in the Freezer

Amidst a whirlwind of choices, the appeal of frozen treats in American households remains strong. They evoke nostalgia while also catering to modern preferences, making them a versatile snack or dessert for any occasion. No need for extensive preparation, these frozen delights are a cheerful, affordable alternative to restaurant trips, providing a small moment of happiness when we need it the most.

For recipe ideas, serving suggestions, or simply to indulge in your favorite flavors, the NFRA’s Easy Home Meals website offers a plethora of resources to enjoy frozen treats all year round.

In conclusion, this survey not only reflects current consumer trends but also reinforces the special place frozen desserts hold in everyday American lives. They combine ease, affordability, and joy, making them the perfect choice for year-round enjoyment.

Survey Methodology

This study, conducted by Morning Consult, surveyed 2,000 U.S. adults online and was weighted to reflect demographics accurately. The survey was executed from June 24 to June 26, 2026, and carries a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points.
