MADD's Updated Initiatives for Parents
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) recently unveiled a comprehensive update to its
Power of Parents Handbook, designed to equip parents and guardians with effective strategies to shield their teens from the dangers of underage drinking and impaired driving. This initiative, in collaboration with
Robert Turrisi, Ph.D., a notable expert in Biobehavioral Health from Pennsylvania State University, is grounded in research-backed methods aimed at influencing youth behavior positively.
In the recent update, MADD provides engaging and accessible resources, including an innovative audiobook version of the handbook. Funded by
General Motors, this new format allows parents to access critical information quickly, enabling them to initiate discussions at their convenience.
Clinical trials involving 1,100 families demonstrated that parents who actively engaged with the MADD handbook significantly reduced their teens' likelihood of accepting rides from impaired drivers. According to
Stacey D. Stewart, the CEO of MADD, the conversation between parents and teens about alcohol and drugs is crucial. She emphasizes that while it may feel challenging, it remains one of the most impactful ways to influence their choices and behavior.
Dr. Robert Turrisi expressed pride in continuing the partnership with MADD, highlighting the shared mission of fostering safer roads and brighter futures for the youth. Despite significant strides, he noted that there is an ongoing need to educate teens about the severe consequences of underage drinking and drug use. Parents’ roles are invaluable in guiding their children toward safe choices through open communication and available resources.
The Urgency of Addressing Underage Drinking
Research indicates alarmingly high instances of risky behaviors among teenagers. About one-third of teens reportedly combine alcohol with drugs like cannabis, leading to significantly increased risks, such as blackouts and injuries. The
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that underage drinking accounts for over 4,300 fatalities annually, with early exposure leading to a higher chance of future addiction or dangerous situations, including alcohol-related accidents.
The findings underscore the critical need for proactive communication between parents and their teens. When parents set clear expectations and remain actively involved in their children's lives, the likelihood of initial engagement in risky activities decreases. The updated handbook serves as a navigational tool for parents, offering age-appropriate language and real-world scenarios to facilitate constructive conversations with middle and high school students.
Partners in Prevention
MADD expresses its gratitude towards corporate partners, such as
Nationwide and
General Motors, whose support has been crucial for this initiative. Natalie Furniss, a Senior Vice President at Nationwide, reaffirmed their commitment to MADD's mission of preventing impaired driving, noting that safeguarding roadways aligns perfectly with their company values.
The
Power of Parents program is accessible year-round at no cost, providing families with critical resources to help guide discussions with teens regarding alcohol and drugs. MADD encourages parents to download the handbook at
