This week, the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) held its highly anticipated annual Courage Awards & Benefit Dinner in Washington, D.C. This remarkable event celebrates the resilience and bravery of America's veterans while recognizing the critical supporters who contribute to WWP's mission. The evening was generously sponsored by Goldman Sachs, setting a tone of gratitude and honor for all attendees.

The dinner was emceed by former NFL All-Pro wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, who welcomed a diverse crowd of veterans, corporate partners, legislatures, advocates, and supporters. The atmosphere was electric with emotion as WWP CEO Walt Piatt shared heartfelt words about the commitment to honor those who served the country.

"This is what a grateful nation looks like—Americans honoring those who have served and supporting our vision to bring every warrior home—mind, body, and soul," said Piatt. His remarks underscored this year's theme of courage and the necessity of community support in keeping promises made to veterans.

During the event, four prestigious awards were presented to individuals, organizations, and communities that have made a significant impact on the lives of veterans:

1. Courage Award – Dawn Halfaker

Dawn Halfaker, a former U.S. Army Captain, received the Courage Award for her exceptional bravery and leadership during her military service. As one of the few women to command a platoon in combat, her story is one of remarkable resilience. Injured during her deployment in Iraq, Halfaker was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Post-service, she founded the Continuing to Serve Foundation, which assists veteran entrepreneurs in their journeys.

2. Service Award – Joe and Daniel Murray and Gloria Shepherd

The Service Award was given to Joe and Daniel Murray, alongside Gloria Shepherd, owners of Stoney Creek Resort in Virginia. Through their annual Stoney Creek Freedom Fest, they have raised over $1 million for WWP since 2016, creating not just funds but a community dedicated to connecting veterans with essential resources. Their efforts exemplify the power of local support and advocacy for veterans.

3. Empowerment Award – NCS Vehicle Donations

Recognizing corporate contributions, the Empowerment Award was presented to NCS Vehicle Donations. Their vehicle donation program has generated millions in support for WWP, and their employees' enthusiastic volunteer efforts have brought additional support to veterans and their families.

4. Legislator of the Year Award

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Representative Mike Bost (R-IL-12) were recognized for their extensive legislative work to enhance veteran benefits and services. Their passion for advocating for veterans in Congress has led to significant legislative achievements, providing improved care and support to those who have served.
