Embrace Gratitude with the 1,000 Acts of Gratitude Challenge
As the Thanksgiving season approaches, songwriter and performer Lou Ward from San Diego is spearheading an inspiring initiative called the
1,000 Acts of Gratitude Challenge. This month-long event encourages individuals, families, schools, and community organizations to engage in acts of thanks, bridging gratitude and action during November.
Ward aims to promote the essence of Thanksgiving beyond just one day. “Thanksgiving isn’t just a date on the calendar; it’s a sentiment we can carry throughout the month and even throughout the year. I wanted to provide a soundtrack to this experience, something people can integrate into their traditions,” he explains.
The objective of this challenge is clear: complete 1,000 acts of gratitude by the end of the month. Participants can partake in a myriad of activities, ranging from expressing appreciation to a veteran, lending a helping hand to a neighbor, reconnecting with a friend, or simply conveying love to a family member. As participants conduct their acts of gratitude, they can track and share these experiences via the official website:
thethanksgivingseason.com/thousand.
How It Works
The challenge is structured around four actionable steps:
Think it. Promise it. Do it. Share it.
- - Think it: Participants start by identifying what they are grateful for in their lives.
- - Promise it: Next, they choose an action that resonates with their gratitude.
- - Do it: Follow through with the action they’ve promised.
- - Share it: Finally, they can share their completed act via the designated platform, inspiring others to join the movement.
One unique way to participate is through the
Gratitude Tree activity. Here, participants write down their intended actions on two paper leaves. One leaf adorns a community Gratitude Tree, while the other serves as a
Promise Leaf, reminding participants to complete their chosen act. This serves not only as a commitment to oneself but also as a community-driven effort to cultivate an atmosphere of gratitude.
Themes of the Month
Expanding on last year's success with the introduction of “It’s Thanksgiving Y’all,” Ward has crafted five original songs which resonate with various themes throughout the month:
1.
FriendsGiving (November 1–7): Celebrate friendships and connections.
2.
VetsGiving (November 8–14): Honor and appreciate veterans for their service.
3.
FamGiving (November 15–21): Focus on family relationships and heritage.
4.
SoulGiving (November 22–28): Reflect on personal worth and kindness.
